9800 Pro Direct X 9 problems

I own a 9800 pro and have problems in only direct x 9 games. Its happened in ut2k4 and nfs:underground. When i goto play these it goes fine for a little while than it shows huge like blocks and angles and crap thats not supposed to be there. I reinstalled directx 9 and ran dxdiag nothing is wrong. I did install a hs/f for the card. Its been acting up ever since. Maybe if i cleaned the GPU? Anyone got any ideas. I'm thinking the new hs/f might have voided my warranty.

Games that it doesn't appear to be affected by, CS, UT2k3, Halo, BF1942. I'll look at more that i have and see what happens.

Redo the installation on the heatsink/fan combo. Make sure to use some decent thermal compound between them. Sounds like it's overheating over the heaviest use of it's capabilities, mainly Dx9.

Try that and see if it goes away, if not, it's most likely the card or drivers having a problem somewhere.

Well I did use arctic silver 5 when installing the hs/f. So i guess ill retry and clean off the spills on the card. But its wierd why does it work in call of duty and halo?

Maybe it's just not as rough on the card.

"I did install a hs/f for the card. Its been acting up ever since."

That leaves me to believe there's something wrong with your installation. If I'm correct, it is a ceramic chip, and not a die. Might want to try using that Arctic Silver for ceramic chips, such as the chipset or gpu.

Here's an idea for you.

Run in windows idle for about an hours, no games. With the case open, touch the side of the GPU's heatsink. It should be "Warmish" to the touch, but not hot enough to fry an egg. Then try watching a demo of say, UT2k3. You don't have to "keep" your fingers on the GPU's heatsink, but check it while it's playing the demo. If it seems like it would physically burn you finger, then you have a problem. They get can get very hot, but you don't want them getting toooo hot if you know what I'm saying. Heck, my GF4 gets twice as hot as my Athlon XP

that is an overheating symptom. could also be bad voltage, but thats unlikely if you have a 400W antec or fortron.

yes, spills are not good. as5 is for ceramics, isnt it? not that it matters much, anything from AS will work fine. just make sure you review carefully the directions on the website. and then follow them to a T, of course.

Depends on the compound you get. The Arctic Silver Ceramics compound is the best for ceramic covered processors, while thier normal is best suited for today's standard CPU Die's.

Im gonna take the hs/f off it and put the stock hs/f on and see what happens.

Wha..? A 9800 Pro and most recent ATI cards have dies that are basically in the same package as a CPU (pic). What is this ceramic chip you speak of?

Arctic Silver Ceramique isn't just for 'ceramic chips,' either. You can use it on anything. Same with AS5

It appears to have been a heat issue i put back on the stock hs/f and i play ut2k4 for about 45 minutes before it errored at like 5. I prolly didnt install the thermaltake one right.
