OK guys and gals... I am looking to buy a new laptop and I am considering spending 2500 on it. I want something really powerfull. My origninal plan was to just get a Dell or Gateway with 1.7 ghz Pm 640 ddr. But now I am seen that HP is offering a laptop with a AMD64 3200+ with 1gb 440ddr a Nvidia 64mb card (dedicated). This sound like a bad ass laptop and get this...it 800s buck cheaper than the Dell(600m) and 500 than the gateway(275xl). SO do i go with the amazing AMD64 or the compacted and powerfull smaller laptop and why would i choose dell over gateway or vis versa. This is just a poll

All the companys have thier ups and downs, no real reason to chose between, do a search on google and you will find good storied about them, and horror stoires about them. My advice would be go with the HP one and spend the money you save on it to purchase thier 3 years warrentys and accidental damage coverage....for 3 years...

Just MHO

I'd go with the Dell for the warranty, and the Centrino processors really do well with power saving.

if youre using it for typical laptop tasks-- ie. word processing, email, surfing--just get the cheapest one with a decent warranty. 3 years is rather excessive, considering most stuff will fail fairly early, or last more than 3 years.
anything graphics intensive youre going to have to go with a high end video card and lots of high speed ram.
the amd64 would work great if youll be doing pure number crunching, without the need for fast ram or a decent video card.

brand names arent really much of a concern.

I've heard only good things about the P-M, so I think it might be worth the extra buck. (With a good warranty, the Dell sounds best. As long as you stick to the original setup or use Dell components they have good customer care.)

But like Red said if you're not out to do real heavy things with it, the AMD64 is a beauty as well and a lot cheaper...

Ow what the hey, I'm drooling all over myself anyways...

Only thing I couldn't handle with the AMD is the battery life. Currently the Centrino "M" has some of the best battery life of mobiles out there currently, and with the power the present at the mobile table, the performance/battery life is well worth it.

When looking at a portable, I'm looking at three things. Battery Life, portability, ability to do the things I need it to. And the Centrino's usually would handle everything I'd portable that I'd ever need perfectly.
