ram questions

is it ok to use different kinds of ram in my pc? cuase right now im using a 128mb pc2100 made by apacer and a friend of mine is selling me his 256mb pc2100 made by another manufacturer. will this work considering both are pc2100? and if its ok to use another brand, would it be ok cuz the total would be 384mb (128mb+256mb) or should it only be 128-258-512?

Just so you know, the only things you have to be sure of are:

1. Will the motherboard support a 256mb chip (99.9% likely yes)

2. Do the two chips run off the same voltages? (99.9% most likely)

3. Do the chips both use the 184 pin layout? (if they both plug in, yes)

Now, I don't see a single problem with your idea. As a matter of fact, I'll tell you what I currently have.

DIMM 0 : Mushkin PC3200 512mb
DIMM 1 : Samsung PC2100 256mb

Big differences, but same stuff, just a different maximum clock ability on the mushkin. They both run the same voltage, use the same pin layout, and both are usable by my motherboard. So I have 768mb of ram.

Just make sure to put the 256 in the first dimm, then the 128 in the one behind it.

some motherboards are picky, some arent. since its a friend, just try it for a week and see.

Well erm... I would like to add to Aod's post that some Mobo's need the smaller stick of memory in the first slot, but if that isn't the case it's indeed advisable (performance wise) to use the biggest in the first slot.

Ow and Aod a tip : It's not highly recommended to mix Dram speeds and if you do it is advisible to place the slowest in the lowest slot... There's a chance you cook the slow memory, cause the timing is usually determined by the memory in the first slot. Lol, don't kick me please

"Lol, don't kick me please"

LoL, kick you? I don't exactly have the ability to kick you..

But you're advise is worthy, yes.

But just for a heads up, since SDram hit the mainstream, motherboards have turned away from differences in DIMMS.

Basically, what I'm saying is, your RAM will only go as fast as the slowest chip, just like a chain breaks at it's weakest link. Though, my current board only supports 2100 speeds, so I'm fine. Just the same as he is.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure about the whole chain breaking thing I'm affraid. My favourite memory page still says to use the slowest stick in the first slot.

Anyhue... I totally forgot about Mobo's not supporting any higher speeds, LOL. So you're safe anyway you look at it...
