Microphone difficulties.

I attempted to hook up my microphone the other day and had some rather interesting problems. My OS is Windows 98. I can get the microphone (non-USB, plugged directly into 'mic in') to project through my speakers, but the computer does not recognize it. It does not allow me to use sound recorder. Any help would be much appreciated! turkeytaker.

i'm not real familliar with 98 but i know win me has a'sound test' under sounds and multimedia-voice. sound recorder is not the best program, there are hundreds you can download for that purpose. what do you mean it does not allow you to use sound rec , the program wont open, or wont record?
anyway, i would do a google search for 'recorder free download' or 'sound studio free download'
there are some great programs out there. i use accoustica mp3 sound studio to make 8 track recordings.
if your mic is playing through the speakers you shouldnt have a problem.

I don't know what was going on. It let me open sound recorder and various other recording programs, but it didn't not recognize my microphone. The sound came through my speakers but the computer told me that it wasn't getting anything. I think I'll chalk it up to it being Windows 98. I loaded XP and all the recording programs involving the microphone work. Thank you for the response!
