IBM Thinkpad 770 Won't charge

I just got a really old (1995) IBM TP 770. He gave me two batteries with it, and they won't charge. Maybe the batteries are dead? But they won't charge. Once a battery got to 4% and then drained inself. Should I buy a new battery?
Also: The hardware is really old. Should I bother upgrading it? I can't afford to buy a new laptop.
If I do upgrade it: will a new processer/hard_drive/ram help? Or should I just not waste my money?
One more: If I have an ethernet router with 4 regular ethernet ports: can I set up a wireless receiver on one of the ports, and have a wireless ethernet on a laptop? Will that work?

Ok, first of all, you can add what you want to the system, but it is VERY old and probably not worth the trouble, but if it's all you need, sure upgrade the hard drive and ram. As changing the processor in a laptop can not only be difficult, it can be a royal pain in the butt.
As for the batteries charging. Rechargable batteries have a core life of X years and Y amount of recharges before they just don't seem to want to hold a charge anymore. Just like any rechargable, thier quality of holding charges degrades over time. Most likely those batteries have had it, considering they are nine years old, and most likely have lived thier X and Y lives. Best idea is to get a new battery, or just run it from AC power .
I don't see any problems with using wireless ethernet on the laptop, if the system will handle it. Make sure the Operating System will handle it most of all, then everything else, such as the processor and having enough hard drive space.
