I'm cursed! Or going insane! Or the world is against me!

I, am cursed.

Let me tell you my story.

While I've had completely bad luck my entire life, I have 'spikes' of bad luck that only seem to come every few years, thankfully.

Well, these last two weeks have been a spike, and I'm just about ready to go buy a gun and go eat at mcdonalds.

Let me go in to details:

Let's start on my two week vacation. That would be a great time for bad luck to strike, wouldn't it? Well, obviously anti-lady luck thought so...

July 6th: Holidays begin
July 9th: Computer starts acting up, occasionally randomly rebooting, occasionally not booting.
July 14th: This beautiful saturday morning, I attempt to turn on my computer. Everything powers up, but nothing on screen. Further testing proves that either my motherboard or cpu is dead.
July 15th: Futilely fiddle with computer, to no avail. It is dead.

July 16th:
-Spend some time determining what motherboard to buy ( I had already decided on the 1.4 athlon). After a while, I determine that the MSI K7T-Turbo motherboard is a good inexpensive board.
-Call up local computer shop, ask if they have the version of the board with no raid, no integrated sound. They say yes. Great! I hop on a bus and head to the store.
-It starts raining. A lot.
-Get to store, ask about chip and motherboard. The guy says, "sure, I'll go get em". Goes in to the back. Comes out, "here is the chip, but we don't have that board". WTF. I had just called and asked for it, so I told him so. "Sorry, we didn't get our shipment. But we have this MSI K7T-Turbo limited edition. " Well, I'd read about that board, and it wasn't that different, so I say sure why the **** not, as long as you have a board without raid and without sound. He says yep, and goes and grabs a board.
Well, these guys, for warranty purposes, like putting the parts together. Okay fine. So they start putting them together and I notice that the god damned motherboard has audio jacks! So I say "whoa, wait just a friggin minute here, I wanted no sound!". They go in the back to get a different board, and come out saying "sorry, we don't have any without sound". Great. Just ****ing great.
At this point I'm already getting impatient, so I just say "fine, build it and I'll take it".
So they build it. Of course, it doesn't fit in the motherboard box anymore (with the heat sink on it). Did I mention it was raining out?
So anyway, I wrap the freakin thing in plastic, hope that it will stay dry, and get a cab home.

-Get home, throw computer together, and spend about 12 hours attempting to install an operating system and have it work.

-Notice some minor ear pain when I am going to sleep.

July 17th:
-Wake up with dulled hearing and pain in my left ear.
-Decide that motherboard must be ****ed, and decide to take it back to the computer store for a replacement.
-Hop a cab, get to computer store. It starts raining.
-Get there, fight with techs, finally they agree to test the motherboard. Lo and behold, it won't boot any of their oses on their test drives.
-They swap the motherboard, and test, and everything is happy.
-I wrap everything in plastic again, and head home.
-Put computer together. It works! I'm happy.
-Fiddle with computer all day then go to sleep.

July 18th:
-Wake up with SEVERE pain and ZERO hearing in left ear. Decide to go to hospital to get it checked.
-Wait 4 hours to see a doctor, who is a quack, and basically tells me that my ear might pop, but it will heal after. Greeeeaaat.

July 19th - July 24th:
Nothing but pain, lack of sleep, and lack of hearing due to a nasty infection in BOTH ears, leaving me completely deaf for part of the time, and unable to eat for most of the time because the pressure made my jaw unable to close.

July 25th - 27th:
Things start looking up, my ears get better (mostly, still have diminished hearing in right ear).

July 28th: Trip over playstation 2 cord, sending machine flying to it's death.

July 29th - Yesterday.
Everything seems fine mostly. I start to think maybe things are looking up.

Today:
I decide to buy a replacement soundcard, since I sold my sblive to my roomie, and have been waiting to buy a new soundcard.
-Go to the store that I know has them.
-They are out of stock
-Go to another store that might have them.
-They have them, so I buy one.

I get home, just a few hours ago. I install everything...

...and guess what.

THE FRONT GOD DAMN SPEAKER INPUTS ARE ****ED AND DON'T ****ING WORK GOD DAMN IT. I ONLY GET SOUND OUT OF THE REAR CHANNELS!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just stepped on a pin.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Okay, I'm buying a gun.

It's my speakers. My speakers are ****ed. My 150$ cambridge soundworks speakers.

So now I have to spend even MORE money. Great. Just freakin great.

Will the bad luck just

NEVER

****ING

END.

I'm going insane alright.

Just testing my XP's jacks... and guess what?

The front channel has a problem. The jack is loose, and you may or may not get sound out of either of the front channels.

What are the chances of a motherboard, cpu, sound box, and speaker set all breaking or dying within 2 weeks of each other?

Yet I never win the lottery.

WTF.

Hmmm, time to buy new speakers man ... maybe you'd like to buy my Promedia 4.1's? Hehehehe ...

Hmmm, that ear thing also has me ... my right ear has been dulled out and clogged since this weekend ... it may be sinus congestion, but it has never been clogged this long.... really irritating...

Hah! You call that a bad time?

I stubbed my baby toe this morning.

*grin*

Your narrative sounds like a typical day for me, Nova...It's hard for part time BadLuckers to cope, but the Pros Like me, just go out and buy more insurance...usually from an Agent who is about to flee the country.

I've been cursed like this my entire life. As long as I can remember, I've only ever had Severe Bad Luck®, and never any of the Good Luck®.

Hah. I just tried to turn on my lamp in my office and the bulb blew.

You know though, most people don't ever believe my accounts of bad luck.

Damn. You didn't take any rocks from a Hawaiian valcano did you?..hehe They say people ship hundreds of those valcanic rocks back each year claiming they are cursed by Pele bringing bad luck if you take them.

You should research good luck on the net. Maybe you can figure out what the best good luck charm would be. If you believe in bad luck, then surely you would havw to believe in good luck..hehe

seems Nova is breaking too many mirrors and walking under too many ladders ... not to mention seeing too many black cats

Posted by: Chako

Wish you all the luck I have...unfortunately....I don't have much to give you either.

Posted by: redwench

i live with black cats and my luck varies between normal and good. hmmmmmm.

Posted by: Chako

Nova..here is a test to cheer you up.

(I have noticed that testing cheers up my students. Especially when it is pop quiz time....then I am the most POPULAR guy in the classroom. hehe...who said teachers don't have a little mean streak in them.)

I have heard that carrying a Gerbil's Foot is good luck...same thing with a Hampster Shoe...If you see 5 rats in formation running north it is considered good luck since they are probably going to someone elses house. Unless you are on a sinking ship then its bad luck. It is also bad luck to be superstitious. Best way I know to break bad luck is to pee on a warty toad and bury it at a crossroads on a full moon. Try not to touch your thingy to the toad or you will get you know what.

I'd give my Everquest characters away to work at BioWare.

*feels the urge to double-click 'Start EverQuest'*

Maybe not.
