DSL MODEM = 5360 speedstream
3RD PARTY ROUTER = linksys
OS = Win XP
CONNECTION TYPE = PPPoE
NOTE = no problem with the dsl line and signal
MODEM LIGHTS STATUS = ALL GREEN
ERROR = 678
SCENARIO: A friend of mine hooked a router to his dsl modem so that he can share internet connection with his other computer. Unfortunately he messed up everything. I told him to make a direct connection between the dsl modem and one of his computer (with Win XP). Then, I told him to go to network connection so that we can use the XP connectoid. He then received error 678.
These are the ff troubleshooting steps that I made:
1. I reset the pc and the modem, unplugged all the cables and waited for 10 secs. After that I put everything back. Tried connecting, still no go: error 678.
2. Checked the NIC if working properly and if it is enabled = yes it is.
3. Checked TCP/IP settings if enabled = yes it is.
4. Deleted the connection and created a new one: still no go, same error
* Found out that LAN connection has red 'X' mark on it. I right-clicked: instead of ENABLE there's DISBALE so I gave it a shot I clicked on DISABLE and 'X' mark is gone but when we tried to connect it says Error 769, NIC was disabled. So I enabled the NIC, and I'm back to Error 678, LAN has 'X' mark again.
NOW WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING HERE, I'm frustrated please help me?

Just kicking in open doors..
With PPPoE you need to get an IP address and DNS server address automaticly assigned, but I take it you use those settings. PPPoE requires a Qos packetplanner as well so try that if you haven't installed it.

If you used an installation CD provided by your ISP then it could be that your PPPoE settings are pooched. This is because WinXP has it's own Version of PPPoE, and the one provided by your ISP doesn't play well with it. (Usually due to it being an older Ver.)
If you have already recreated the connection manually and that didn't work, then from the command line run:
netsh interface ip reset log.txt
Once you have done this, restart the computer.
If that doesn't work:
Try a system restore: Start > All Programs > Applications > System Tools > System Restore
If that doesn't work: (YOUR CAN'T REVERSE THIS)
Try a system REPAIR using the WinXP installation CD.
If that doesn't work: (YOUR CAN'T REVERSE THIS)
Some of the users that I have dealt with have done complete reinstalls because of this issue... let's hope you don't get to this point.
