hello about 2 days ago i got an email that said it had an error message failure thing and it told me to download it i didn't but i still fell that it may do something if i download the message it came from a hotmail account with the username of 00006812

My question is
does this sound like a virus installer attempt or not?

Yes.

Well, sort of.

Two possibilities:

1) It was a sneaky virus, and when you downloaded the file the virus would get on your computer.
or....
2) Someone you know had a virus that sent an e-mail that looked like it was from you. That e-mail bounced, and since it looked like it was from you, you got the error message with the error information attached. Here's how that works:

Say your friend Joe has a virus. The virus goes through Joe's e-mail looking for people he sends e-mail to. Joe has recently sent you an e-mail, so the virus decides to pretend it's you for a while. It sends an e-mail to a random address, with the "from" line having your e-mail address on it. The random address doesn't exist, so the mail server returns the e-mail to the sender (which is you, thanks to the sneaky virus's trick) with the error information attached.

I would just delete it and forget about it.
