During (3d) games, computer sorta freezes... major lag

Ok here is my problem:
When I play any (usually 3D) game, unless it takes like 3mb of memory to run, sort of freezes after five minutes. In a period of like 10 seconds, it gets choppy, freezes, gets choppy, and unfreezes. After the first time, this problem occurs in a shorter amount of time, about every 2 minutes. I've gone through a lot of steps to rid my computer of this problem but it wont work!!! If somebody could lend me a hand here I'd be REALLY thankful!
1.8 GHZ Intel Pentium 4 Proccessor
512 MB RAM
GeForce FX 440
80 GB Hard drive
Compaq
P.S. I followed some steps somebody emailed me to help me out a few months ago, it worked, and now its back to it's old problem. I've tried the basics, like deleting all startup programs, searching for spyware, turning off all appearance things, and multiplying my initial and maximum computer ram by 1.5.

Your using a Compaq..nuff said, lol.
Just kidding. Personally I hate Compaqs and pretty much any manufactured computer. I've just had bad experinces with them that is all; and they load a ton of crap on them that you don't need.
Ok, now that my little rant is over, here's what could be the problem:
You have a pretty beast of a system...that is until you get to the video card. What "3D games" are you playing? The MX line of GeForce cards aren't really that great, although this "freezing" as you call it shoudn't be happening. Are you sure its "freezing" and not a lag in frames.
1. If your running the latest games on with that card your going to get some major frame rate drops, not to mention that many games may not even run.
2. Crack the case open while your playing the game and try to see if any of the fans are acting strange while your playing. Check mainly for the graphic card fan. (this is just a guess)
Those are the two things that I can think of. Make sure your not running anything in the background while your playing games. ie: alt-tab-delete for task manager.
Honestly I think your graphics card is the culprit. Its just not that great of a card. Ask a friend if you can swap cards (making sure its better than the one you have) for a day or something. Just make sure you get rid of the old graphics drivers and install the new ones. If this fixes the problem then your graphics card was the culprit.
You may also want to update the drivers for you card first then try that.

Yeah some dude warned me about how the frame rate was dropping....
Its really a big lag spike like on the MMORPGS you just freeze for a second and then you return like normal (and people are all the fsck all over the place) not a freeze...
But maybe the real problem is my aging video card... you can sure as hell hear the fans blasting when the computer is on--I doubt any of em are not on. And why did my title go from 3d games to 3d sedativezes??
Thanks
P.S. WTF??? I just realized that my post turned into some gangster letter or something..... what the hell.

I'm having the same exact problem. It is the exact same symptoms, my computer freezes for about exactly 15 seconds, first in longer intervals, and then after a while it happens exactly every 2 minutes (I timed it...). Whatever sound is playing starts going into a loop, and I always seem to hear a weird clicking sound when it happens. And I have not figured out what it is. Although my video card is kinda old, I'm almost perfectly sure it's not the card, unless it has something to do with Direct X9. Because I noticed that it began to happen shortly after I upgraded to DX9. All my games would play flawlessly in the past, the same games I'm playing now, and yet they all seem to have this happen, that includes Star Wars Galaxies, RtCW: Enemy Territory, Everquest, Age of Empires, MechWarrior 4, and just about every other game I try to play. My other guess is that it might be a Trojan of some kind... PLEASE HELP if you know how to fix this.
My system specs are:
1.6 Ghz Pentium 4
20 GB Hard Drive
512 SD Ram
32 MB Riva TNT2 Graphics Card.
Also a Compaq

I'm also having this problem. I've checked for any pograms running with Task Manager, and the only thing that goes up in CPU during the lag time are windows security applications.
My system specs are:
1.7 Ghz Pentium 4
30 GB Hard Drive
512 SD Ram
GeForce FX 5200 (128MB)
Compaq as well

I hate to break it to you all. But you all have very slow video cards. And video is stressed in games, so either lower your in game resolution or get new video cards.

Nah, it wasn't the video card... I cleaned out the PC with one of those Air Duster cans (especially the fans), and that seemed to do it for me.

It's not the video card, I just upgraded to an nVidia 5900 FX, and still having the same problems. I've never in my life dusted this computer, so I'll try that and let you guys know what happens.

hey...as for the spyware problem...you have run some sort of find and removal tool I'm guessing (i.e. adaware personal se), and run a virus scan as well. after that...check hard disk space remaining...if you have less than 6 percent... you can't even defrag your drive, and it will cause programs to slow down...solution...delete the crap until you have at least 10 percent freespace, and defrag. Next...reinstall the driver...make sure you have latest patch for your video game...and call Scotty to give you warp power...if that doesn't work...disable your antivirus and run program...if that doesn't work...turn off setiathome...lol
let me know how it goes...l8rz

Guess what... it was the dust.... lmao!! This stupid thing had been pissing me off for such a long time, and it was such a simple solution. It is somewhat in part due to the compaq... It has to do with how the fan is on top of the CPU's heatsink. It causes a crap load of dust to accumulate between the ridges of the heat sink, since the fan is pullin the air through it. You should've seen how much DUST!! Thanks for posting.
