Programs loading on startup and other stuff

Hello. When my computer starts up, many programs also start up with it in the task bar and many of them, I wish would not load until I actually manually click on them because with so many programs loading on start up it takes my computer an extra minute to load which gets rather annoying. Is there any way to stop these unwanted programs from loading up instead of selective start up, or is that the way that your supposed to fix this problem?

I also have another question; my computer seems to get really slow and laggy after I let it sit for a while, go away, and then come back. I have a Dell Pentium 3, 1 GhZ processor, 512 mb RAM and a 56 Gigabyte hard drive that is only about half filled up. When I try to open any folders or files after letting it sit it loads very slowly and the processor makes a lot of noise like its doing something, but my files don't pop up so I wonder whats really going on.

Finally, I was wondering if there is an easy way of reformatting my hard drive. Ive been wanting to for a while, but I dont want to lose many of my files and dont really know where to start with reformatting.

Any help with these questions would be much appreciated, sorry I have so many

For the programs that load on start up: Go to start>run and type in "msconfig". Then click on the start up tab and uncheck anything that you don't want to start when windoze boots. As far as you computer slowing down, the programs loading on start up could be causing that. You should also do a virus/spyware/adware scan and make sure to defrag your HD and maybe run a scandisk.

Now as to reformatting, there is no way to reformat your HD without losing your data if you don't back it up first. If you want to go that route,
here is Microsofts page on how to do that. If you have any questions about it post back.

Thank you very much for your help. One last thing, I have Norton Anti-Virus so I can scan for viruses, but how do I scan for ad-ware and spyware? Also my scan disk runs very slow when I try and do a thorough clean. I control + alt + delete and shut down all of my programs before running it, but it still takes forever (I turn it on before I go to sleep and it still hasn't finished by the time I wake up) Is there anything I can do about this?

Use these two programs to scan for adware/spyware:

Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot: Search and Destroy - http://security.kolla.de

As for your Scandisk problem, it sounds like the scan keeps restarting when you're not watching it. Try booting info Safe Mode and then running it.

a thorough scandisk will take a very long time, although it shouldnt take 8 hours for 25g. run a regular scandisk first to correct the errors if you dont do it weekly.

if you leave your computer for an extended period, the default is that the drives spin down to conserve energy and reduce noise. so its perfectly normal for them to take 30 seconds to spin back up when you return. unless youre running a 911 dispatch center off this computer, its just annoying.

Thank you all for all of your help. I was able to complete a thorough scan disk and hopefully I won't have any more problems.
