Directplay causes lockup on exiting mp game

Whenever i am playing a multiplayer game (BF 1942, BF Vietnam, Civilization 3 conquests, or Rise of Nations) and i go to exit the game, the game locks up. Now when this first started i thought it was the game, until i got bf 1942 and then conquests. It was then i realized that it was happening to all my multiplayer games. I have updated the drivers for my nic card and have been looking around and testing. I ran dxdiag and ran the directplay test and what do you know it locked up when i went to leave. Basically i am curious if anyone has any suggestions on a remedy for this issue?
