Boot problems. Virus??

Hi.

I'm running Windows XP and I can't boot up my computer. I have winxp but its an old version and i dont have my firewall on, so my friend says i got a virus.
My comp freezes in the boot process. I managed to boot to cd and access c: but nothing makes sense. I've tried to format but that didn't work either. I'm pretty mad because I just built this computer and I can't use it. My friend says thats what you get for not updating windows and leaving your firewall off, but thats not much help to me now.

How can I get rid of the virus or format the drive?

try deleting the partions first and then recreating them using fdsik.

details needed. it may or may not be a virus.
