Awk PROBLEMS windows XP cannot load EXE files

i think this maybe a software problem. First off i'm an avid computer enthusiest, and know a few things about computers and software. However i'm stuck on this problem that i have.
I was recently doing some updating of software on my system (WU, software and hardware updates) I also had exposed my computer to the open WWW.

so my problem: after that i did a WU i get this error that windows update failed, and then i started to get this message about how the cdrom is not working correctly, i click ok and the dang popup will not go away(so i'm thinking virus). Also when i restarted my computer i got a the BSOD with an error with ati2dvag.dll. so i had to restart it in safe mode and after doing so i had no access to any .exe program and the taskbar/start menu bar is greyed out. when trying to open a program is tells me that the configuration file is missing i've tried everything from running HijackThis and other regedit software most of which will not even run because of the no access of exe programs. I could access the start menu using the Windows button on the keyboard and naturally it was empty exept for the shut down and log off buttons.

anyway here are my system specs
Windows XP PRO sp1
MOBO 7nnxp
Graphics ATI AIW PRO 9800 128mb
Main Harddrive setup 2 Maxtor SATA 120GB running in RAID 1 setup with Silicon Image RAID software.

other programs:
well the list is to long for details but most of the basics
i was also running Norton systemworks 2004 w/antivirus. however i had turned off the internet security for a little while.

So tell me watch ya think my problem maybe. i still have access the drive and i think i can backup most of my files to another hard drive. so if worst comes to worst i'll do a complete format/install (WHAT A PAIN IN THE A55)

yeah i know my system is MESSED UP!!! don't know what happened - driver error, virus, software issue

Sounds like a possible virus, if you have access to another computer iwth nortons on it. Make some up-2-date recovery disk, run live update before you do so. The recovery disk will scan the computer in DOS mode for virus's and remove/disinfect any if found. If that does not work. I recomment slipping the drive into another computer and saving everything you can. Then run a complete scan disk on it. Also may want to look into the HDD manufacutres site for a HDD testing utility.

If the virus scan does get it up and running, make sure to run a few onlline scans from some of the other virus programs sites, and as always scan for spyware if possible with ad-aware and spybot S&D, which both can be found on cnet.com.

In any legnths like I said, if the scans do not show any problems and it still will not run right, save everything you can and reload the system.

run a repair installation. that should enable the little darling to at least run stuff, even with a virus. if (big if here) you have a virus, youve probably had it quite a while. its unlikely you picked it up during a windows update.

You have a virus called MS Update Virus. I have the same problem at the moment. Although I work in IT I can't fix it!

You are unable to open programs, .exe, and it wants various .dll files.

Any ideas?

yeah i think i do

i've been trying to do a reinstall of Windows XP and it hasn't been very easy to accomplish. I was running my OS on 2 SATA drives and setup in RAID1. When doing a install i need the RAID drivers and everytime i try it tells me that the drivers are corrupt or the disk is wrong.

So my only option is to use a second drive (first removing the sata drives of course) and then install Windows on the new one. So far everything seems to be working fine. I haven't connected the sata drives to format them yet but i'll let you know how it goes. I'm still installing security and antivirus software but once i have everything done and updated i'll let you know if it worked.

Hopefully tomorrow (GMT -6:00 Central time)

I hope, if others are having the same problems as me that they find an easier solutiong becuase for me to do all this has been nothing but a complete pain in the butt.

Oh by the way i did try the Recovery and it was a "No go" My A: and CD-ROM drive were in accessible!!
