Oh man..
My prom is coming up... I got a hot date, but I'm clueless as to etiquitte. (I can't even spell the word right!)
Any pointers?
All I know is that I"m weaing a black suit, and she's wearing purple.
Totally unrelated to anything tech, but I gotta ask.
Someone has to know.
Posted by: Zendu
purple corssauge (sp?) couldnt hurt ITs pretty much a date, just open doors for her and crap like that, never hurts if you can dance too.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
<writes on checklist>
Learn to dance...
Open doors...
Don't panic...
Got it.
Thanks.
Posted by: redwench
dont forget to roba a bank as well.....
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Together?
Or should I do it and present to money to her in an elaborate reception?
Eh, I got money. Work has it's advantages.
Posted by: SpecOpsHoov
Be a gentleman. Walk with her, not behind or in front. Pretty basic stuff.
But yeah, learn to dance. Perhaps a girl could explain why, but for some reason they love to dance.
...and, uh, don't do anything that night that would make the police, or even worse, her father come looking for you.
Posted by: armystud0911
One little thing that I learned about in the Army that will make a girl feel adored is how you respond to her getting up, and sitting down at the table. If you pull her chair out for her, sit down after she sits down, that's a good start. When she gets up to go to the bathroom or anything else, stand up until she leaves, when she gets back, stand up again till she is seated, she will feel like a princess. In addition to that, just be kind, get her a drink, compliment her, and DON'T leave her alone in the middle of a crowded room while you go off to talk to your friends!
Posted by: Blackknight
To sum up: be nice and compassionate.
Posted by: redwench
yeah, then she wont run away screaming because youre popping up and down like a yo-yo.

dude prom is over rated, on a side note goto the store and buy some thing to protect yourself, oh fyi shell enjoy the her pleasure kind
no in all seriousness just treat it like a norml date and not the prom, and nomatter what youve heard you dont always get laid right after prom
Posted by: INeedHelp
dane dude, i just got rejected by this girl yesterday
Posted by: Gerbilo
Don't fool around with a girl other than your date, that really didn't do me any good... wait.. nevermind, it was a swell idea! Especially when my date walked in.... good closure hahaha
Posted by: TheeMon
better closure when your date wants you to have, err do "something" with her and her sister, actually gerb ask me about that on 86ed and ill tell you about this girl, omg crazyness
back to prom, prom sucks i spent like 400$+ last year for prom and went home empty handed i doubt if i go this year, i well i kinda made plans with a girl to go but the plans are realy flimsy and im hoping i wont have to go... prom=expensive and overrated
Posted by: Superfly3176
My date last year (ex-girlfriend) wouldn't even dance with me, so me and her best friend had a blast doing the tango.
All i can say is do be a gentleman, but have fun and go fricking nuts it worked for me last year.
I get to goto 2 this year. It's a blast and it isnt overrated if you know how to have fun.
Posted by: TheeMon
yes its over rated, its the same as any other school dance but 10x expensiver, unless its your gf(of a long time) id skip the whole thing

Prom is overrated IMO, the party after and the next day/night afterwards were more fun than i could have imagined
you gotta make the best of it, if you go in, thinking it will suck, it probably will, but if you go in, ready to have fun, hell yea it will be, if your a senior, HS is over, **** around, don't give a shit, have a blast, you ain't got too much time left to do so
Posted by: Ack1027

My prom was alright. I went with a friend, and we have a good time. My table ended up being all people I had known for years, or just made friends with recently. My g/f's prom 3 years later was better. The only thing that sucked was we sat a table full of people we didn't like. Was out of school 3 years and still had to see people I couldn't stand when they were 14 and 15, and still just as annoying at 17 and 18.
Best thing to do is just be a gentleman, and have fun. Hey, if she has a sense of humor, make her laugh. Dancing is fun, if you like it. I had to practically beg my g/f to get on the dance floor with me.
Posted by: Bobaroo
Prom sucks
But have fun, be respectful and you will enjoy
Posted by: Phate
Some kid took a blow up doll to our prom last year. It was pretty funny.
He didn't get laid though, I heard she was a bitch
Posted by: Yuneek
Okay, I've never been to a prom so I cannot comment there but I can help on the dancing, fun and getting laid issue.
First of all: Dancing
Dancing has a major trick to it. Of course it involves the persons build, your learning curve... etc. etc. but the main thing is to NOT be nervous or scared to try to dance. I'm a breakdancer and I used to compete, I haven't lately do to school, work and fighting championships but I am white, nerdy and I dance with ghetto black kids from Atlanta who grew up dancing along side Usher (Not literally but you get the idea). (They are black anf from Atlanta.... just the usher thing.. not quite.)
Let loose and try to do what people do, you may look stupid but don;t be embarrassed, LAUGH WITH PEOPLE IF THEY LAUGH AT YOU. To this day I get people laughing at me and I usually laugh to or ask for a challgne (depending where I am and how I feel).
Second: Fun
Man, if you listen to everyone saying its overrated, you will not have fun. DO NOT spend a nunch of money! Flowers, personallity, affection and attention will get you farther with most girls than a 10 pound diamon ring, and if it will not, then you need a new girl.
Third: Getting laid
So you want to? Don't like? You do. Here is my way.
You in highschool, girls are starting to develop logical brain patterns (unliek middle school girls) so my techniques will work.
#1 - BE YOURSELF. Say what you would say to your family. Just be exactly how and who you are. Trust me, its hard to believe but putting any type of show on for her is BAD.
#2. Be sweet, say sweet things. Lie if you have to, but don't make it obvious. I wont give you examples because remember, you are being yourself, not me. I'm sure you can come up with sweet things to say.
#3. Do not as about sex.
#4. Confident and outgoing but NOT cocky. Nice, friendly.
Follow that and when its time to go, ask her if shed like to go to (insert place you would like to have sex and could get to here), do not say why. If not, try to talk her into it WITHOUT being pushy, just ask why not and explain how it would be fun and you'll make sure everything is okay.
If you get her to go...
Cuddle with her with clothes for at least 20 mins, up to 30-40. Do a lot of talking all about HER and compliment her. When she says something stupid, laugh at her, make fun of it a little and when she is liek "Hmph" or anything like that, say I'm just kidding you know I love you (or if inappropriate), replace i love you with I don't think of it you as stupid (or dumb, or clumsy or whatever applies). Then after some time of talking and cuddling, touch her and let your hormones lead you, but be patient. Touching, feeling, showing, fingering, eating (can be dropped but if you really want some your going to want to do this one), sex.
So there you go, take or leave my advice.
Posted by: Ack1027
Damn, you're from Atlanta?!?! I basically live in Alanta, Stone Mountain/Lilburn specifically.

So lie, but don't lie out of character.
Posted by: Gerbilo
hahaha, sounds good to me

I enjoyed prom....all 4 times. It can be good fun, if you let it.
Also, Atlanta is cool. I go there a lot. I live in Tuscaloosa. It's only a 3 hour trek away.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Holy Cow..I leave for a few days and look what happens...
Thanks for all the info. I'll do what I can.
I bought a suit, got the flowers and stuff, everything should work out.
As for the trying to get laid thing, it's not gonna happen. I didn't plan on it, still don't.
Prom is May 15...after it happens, I'll let everyone know what happened.
Thanks. A lot.
Really.

haha, careful, i said that right before my senior prom and then didn't return to the site for 14 months... I have NO clue why, but.. i'm back now aren't I?
Posted by: Bobaroo
I am going to a Junior Prom May 14th. Hopefully I will have a good time, for my second prom in 2 months.
I will be honest, I had a fun time and my Senior Prom, even though I hate dancing. I guess it also depends whom you go with
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Okay, I'm gonna swear here because I am so damn pissed here. Forgive me.
I am so ****ing pissed ay my school right now that I could shoot every ****ing principal there.
Those bastards banned my date from going to the prom. She forged a note or something. Big ****ing Deal. WHAT THE ****?! Why the hell did they have to do that? THE PROM IS IN TWO ****ING DAYS!!
God, I am so ****ing pissed right now, the principal is a power-hungry bastard. Where the hell does he get off doing that??
I don't know what the hell I am gonna do now, but seriously, this pisses me off so much. What the ****..
Listen, I'm sorry for the language, but seriously. That pisses me off.
Posted by: armystud0911
I'm sorry to hear that man, I know how much that that date meant to you
Posted by: Blackknight
Not to be cold hearted, but if she broke the rule, then you should be mad at her, and not the principle.
Posted by: SpecOpsHoov
Why would she forge a note in the first place?
Posted by: Gerbilo
You've got 2 options IMO
a. Boycott prom*
b. try to appeal
* with extra attitude(IE waterballon bomb it and such
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Knight- You're not being cold hearted...you're just seeing logic through my blind anger.
Armystud- Thanks. It did mean a lot.
I seriously don't know why she forged the note or what the note even was. Still, why the **** couldn't the damn principal just wait 2 damn days? 48 ****ing hours..that's all. I feel bad as a result, but now she has to miss her only junior prom, over a ****ing note.
What the hell is the sense in that? I know forging the note was wrong, but is the damn school that retarded that they are going to ruin this girl's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?
Honestly, what the ****.. It just screws her over, and it screws me over.
Posted by: redwench
hmmm, when i was in school, forging a note meant suspension. which automatically meant no EC activities, including prom. sounds like she got off easy.

(shudder) that was a little out of line.
I forged a note once in HS, it was too get out of taking a tobacco survey, when I had to finish a big drafting project that day so I just quick forged it and next thing I know: BUSTED! that's the last time I'll forge ANYTHING. We had a principal who knew everything about everybody but we liked him cuz he was still nice, he just knew when we blew it too. I'd have to say I'm glad I got busted now, better I learn my lesson then than later.

Anywho, I'm sure you guys could drop your prom plans and go to some other non-school sponsered event.
Posted by: Bix VT
Yeah Flanders, that was a bit...out of line. Alright though, I'm sure Clarke will forgive you *wink wink@Clarke*
Personally I think your principle is a jerk.
If anyone is interested (not likely) this is my prom story. I asked this girl I know, also kind of my best friend, I asked her back in september. She said yes, and I was super happy. Then, about 2 months ago, she asked if it was "ok if I don't go to prom with you. I'm not planning on going at all, I hate dances." So, being the nice guy that I am, I said yeah, sure, that's fine. So, about 3 weeks ago she decides she wants to go agian. But not with me. She asks the guy that I hate the most in all the world to go with her, but he's already going with someone else. She then asks 4 more of my friends, but they all have dates as well. So she's going to go with a girlfriend of hers...and exclude me. And she calls me her "best friend"...right.
I started to email this to her this morning, and wrote a letter flaming her extensively. I was about to send it but then I realized that it would be a bad idea to burn the only female friend I have. So I re-wrote the letter intending it to be nice. 3 times I re-wrote it, and every time it turned into burning her, I mean real nasty personal insults. (all of them true, btw) Is there something wrong here? If any of you have heard the LP song on Reanimation called "P5hng Me A*wy", I must listen to that song at least 5 times a day with her in mind. I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do about her...I mean, I really want to be with her, she says I'm her best friend, and being friends with her would be fine with me, but I honestly have no idea what I should do. She is just so good at getting under my skin and making me feel like crap...I can't tell you how many gallons of gas I've wasted driving around trying to cool off after she's done her latest crime against me...
Wow...that's a long post. Sorry guys, didn't mean to spam or vent or whatever.
Posted by: redwench
shes not your friend. she thinks of you as someone to use as a convenience when absolutely necessary. now, if thats ok with you, feel free ^^
Posted by: Bix VT
I'm not so sure about that though, some days she's genuinely my friend but then others she's the devil incarnate...
ARGH sometimes I really wish I was a hermit...

Bix i will tell you the same thing i told Armystud when he criticized me;
I already said i'm sorry...ah never mind!! "sigh"
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Sorry about lashing out a bit. I was mad, and still am somewhat. Still, I apologize, though I found it a bit rude. I forgive ya. No hard feelings.
I've calmed down, and worked things out with my date. She still can't go, but we're okay about that. Her best friend offered to accompany me to the prom, I'm not totally alone. I still hope it is going to work out.
Redwench, she didn't get off light. She got banned from prom, and still faces suspension as a result. Forging is a level IV or something like that referral, which is BAD.
I still need to get over this, so I'm gonna be a bit irrational in this thread for a while.
Thanks everyone, and once again, apologies to those I yelled at. I hope it is understandable.

"sigh" the power women have over men is often underestimated and not understood fully enough. I wish i could understan how a female could hold so much power over males, despite us ruling the world and whatnot
I speak from experience, i know what Bix is going thru. SoOmetimes it seems like you are th only one she even acknowledges exists. At other times you could be a piece of turd for all she cares. I dunno, so much power... Cant wait to get married though She can be the man for all i care, just lemme be able to play my games and be on top...of umm things like bills and stuff.
My advice though Bix, try to get into a frame of mind where, if you find yourself thinking about her too much ask yourself if she is doing the same. if your answer is "no she isnt," then switch off and do something else. Wont guarantee it'll work but it helped me.

There are plenty of girls out there who are nice, (by plenty I mean enough for all the nice guys). I have known a lot of girls who like to treat me like the soles of their feet but I purposely didn't get close to them, the ones that were really my friends stuck by me no matter what happened, and that will be the kind of girl that I marry someday.
Posted by: laborat
before I choke on the toxic topic of highschool Proms, a few words perhaps to include my feelings on partys in general, dating, and expectations that may or may not be realistic...
First of all, no one should ever approach a new situation with any expectation at all...or if there is an expectation it should be simple --like I am going to enjoy myself no matter what. Now why is that you might wonder? Well, our fantasys pander to our moods and if we have high expectations on a situation and it doesn't go down like we imagined it.. that can lead to depression or anger or a loss of self esteem.
I went to my prom without expectation, mainly to find out for myself what the big deal was. All I found was a gym full of girls in fancy prom dresses and guys in suits and ties standing around wondering what they should do. Oh, and a bunch of teachers standing around waiting for them to do something. Aside from the occaisional trip outside for a smoke or nip, there wasn't much to it. I ended up having a good time even though I went dateless. (Allowed me to dance with all the girls hehe)
When I was in high school, the topic of sex and dating was not heavily engaged in. It was a chore just to base hop. Girls had girdles and bras and a high sense of self. Once upon a time people actually believed you should marry before you have sex. Thank god for the 60s. Although this is considered old fashioned today, it doesnt deny that fact that sexual interest in either sex is more aroused by lack of attention than constant pressure to have it. Pheromes aside. It will either happen or not and usually be initiated from your date rather than you. This happens in the form of cues you can look for... questions like, You say you are going to be a lawyer?, Your dad has lots of property?, You are going to get a brand new Camero for graduation? Going to Harvard, Princeton, or Michigan? you get messages like this you are being selectively appraised for matehood. Since both sex, dating, and Proms are just a dance anyways, just enjoy the dance for what it is, and don't think that much about it. just have fun.

See, I'd like to just ditch her, but really she's the closest thing I have to a friend in the offline world. I used to spend a lot of time with my car to make up for it but now gas costing what it does...

Posted by: redwench
roffle
easy enough to figure out what youre missing. find a rational adult you respect and ask them if they think going to a prom is worth all the bother, in retrospect. im betting they say no
Posted by: Freak
Hey, set aside your emotions for a moment and use your head. High school is shitty when all your 'friends' are backstabbing ****ers, but it's okay..it's just a phase. Almost everybody is like that at that age. I'm about the same age as you are and even though I might have lots of friends, I only trust 2 or three completely. That's because they've always thought of me before themselves, and that's what makes them a good friend. You just got to meet more people and move on from jerks that don't deserve your time.
About the girl..you should approach her in person and sit down and calmly discuss it. Talking in email doesn't always work out well when you can't see their expression. Keep your cool and talk to her, maybe she'll turn out to be a bitch or maybe it's just a big misunderstanding.
One more thing..prom doesn't have to be about dates. Nobody will think you're a loser or whatever if you don't have a date. A lot of people I know are just going with a whole bunch of friends as a group, not because they can't get a date, but because they want to spend the last high school event they'll ever have with the people that they'll remember most 20 years from now.
Don't let your emotions get the best of you. Being a teenager is only a tough time if you feel before you think.
Posted by: armystud0911
Very true laborat. Although my prom experiance was a lot different from the norm...
I'd have to say that for me, my prom was a lot of fun, I didn't go to "get laid" or anything, the girl was just a good friend of mine and we had a lot of fun with all the rest of our friends. Our school didn't have a lousy dance in a gym, we had a fancy dinner on a huge Navy Pier cruise on Lake Michagan, it was beautiful. I will never forget the fun we had watching our underclassmen make fools of themselves trying to entertain us, it was great, I also enjoyed going on the top deck, having long talks and watching the chicago lakefront go by. Also, I think I spent $100 on EVERYTHING that night (inc. suit, corsage, flowers and tickets), so it didn't make too big of a dent in my wallet unlike a lot of people these days.
Finally my highschool experiance in general was a lot of fun, I didn't have a lot of people going around stabbing me in the back, I had true friends. There was also a general sense of well being amongst my classmates, sure there were a few rotten apples but we didn't let that get to us. Now that I've graduated, I often visit when I am home and love to see all of my underclassmen friends as well as my teachers, staff, principal and yes even the cafeteria workers. Some people call me a prude but I don't care, at least I'm happy and that's what counts right? *he scatches his head and looks around with uncertainty, right guys? *
In short, High School and life in general can be a lot more fun if you have a positive attitude, and keep all of your problems in perspective.
Posted by: Bix VT
That's another issue for me: will it be worth the money? Will the memories be worth the $300 I'll spend that could have been put into my car?
I'm a bit more rational this morning, and I'm thinking no...
Posted by: Ack1027
If any of you have heard the LP song on Reanimation called "P5hng Me A*wy", I must listen to that song at least 5 times a day with her in mind.
Did I already mention in another thread I bleed LP? Heh.
Anyway, the people here are giving some great advice, my advice is to take their advice. But experience is the best teacher, you should figure this thing out on your own and your hobbies like music and cars will help.
Only thing that worries me is that you said she's your best offline friend. You should anaylze that again and look at the people you know more closely. I'm sure you'd say something different now than what you typed before in your mad rage X_x

Tell us how it goes man...
The reason I said she's my best offline friend is: she really is. I have so many more online friends and they are of much higher calibur. Sad? Maybe. But I have broadband, so it's not so bad
Posted by: 9:35
Any slightly intelligent person can throw a much better party with $300 that would be a hell of a lot more memorable than prom.
edit: TAKE YOUR COMPUTER TO PROM
Posted by: Bix VT
!!
YES! It's the perfect solution...put my PC in my car and drive around all of prom night! Gas will run about $100, much less than prom, and I'll be with my two best friends!
Great idea 9:35, thanks. (not being sarcastic)
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Okay..
The prom was fun. I had good times. It could have been better, if my date went, but you know..
Damn.
Anyway, I did a little bit of dancing, a lot of hanging out, and it was overall a better time than I thought it would be. A lot of my friends were there, and we all enjoyed ourselves.
I also made Prom court. Not bad. I was happy, and so was everyone else.
As for my date, she looked beautiful, even though she could only go to coronation. I felt terrible that she couldn't go. I have photos, though, maybe I will include some.
Overall, things went well, though they could have been better. I still got to dance with some of my friends, so that is a plus. I didn't fall asleep either.
Thanks for the interest that everyone had here, and I really appreciate it. Maybe I will get into specifics later, upon request.
