win xp ... windows on start, desktop & taskbar going mad! help please!!!

Am asking this on behalf of a friend who is struggling to keep control of the computer long enough to post :S
The comp (XP) will run okay for a few mins, then will suddenly will lose control of the mouse/screen and pages from start menu/desktop menu/taskbar menu etc start opening and closing very fast, with flashing pages coming and going. This lasts a few seconds, with the comp then either returning to normal, or freezing completely requiring reboot. This happens every few minutes :S
Things tried so far ..... changing mouse and keyboard, updating and running AV, spybot, adaware. Doing system restore to 2 days ago (problem started yesterday evening)
Run out of ideas .... any help, ideas, info much appreciated :-*

if a system restore a bit further back is available, try that.
locate the xp cd, stick it in the cd drive, and reboot. go into the bios (usually by pressing delete when prompted), and enable cd boot AND make sure its higher in the boot order than the hard drive, if those arent already set. comp should then boot from the xp cd, start the installation process. after skipping over the partitioning and formating stuff, it should give you a few options for installation. select a repair installation.
