windows 98 start-up

When computer starts Explorer doen't load. When I press control alt delete all that shows is systray and rundll32. It doesn't seem to have a major affect on computering but was interested as to why it doesn't show in the end task dialog box. The only things I notice different is the computer often freezes up and system resources deplete quickly. Then when I press control alt delete it brings up a box saying computer is dangerously low on resources would you like to end task on ... and lists running programs. Explorer isn't one of them. This happens after about 15 minutes on computer and don't have a lot of resource hogging programs running.

Hi there,
Win 98 nightmare!!
I have limited experience with operating systems but i used to have 98 1st edition and similar things happened to me.
Firstly... is your hard drive nearly full?
You maybe dont have enough RAM to operate with a very full system, especially if the programs you are running require large amounts of space.
Secondly... run a virus scan program to see if your PC is infected.
Go to SYMANTEC's website and they have a free virus scan available.
If you scan and find one, they will tell you what it is and offer you a free tool to remove it.

Also.. defragmenting the hard drive may help. It makes your desktop go a bit spooky for the first couple of start-ups but it sorts its self out pretty quickly.

It all sounds to me like you are running some software that is challenging your PC's memory and processor speed.

I hope this helps.

if u could hold the F8 key at startup in order to start in safemode
then when it comes up click start>run the type MSCONFIG
and right down and then give up a list of what is in there in the left colomn. post it here for some of us to investigate for you please.

Hard drive shows 1.37 gb used space and 1.00 free.

has nuthin to to with nuthin but looks like u have dial in server installed ...do u need it?
check to make sure... if so remove it unless peoplr do dial into ur machine

Posted by: deb15

How do I remove It? Also in bootlog.txt it shows dynamic load failed C:\windows\system\mrci.vxd (000D62E4) file not found

Posted by: deb15

MY system resources deplete very fast and I cannot find the leak that causes this as the only things listed in task dialog box are systray, rnaapp, rundll32 and AOL.

Posted by: redwench

er.....everything on that list is normal.

something is eating your resources, run a couple different anti-virus scans and a couple spyware scans. aol does leak, but not in 15 minutes. scandisk and defrag should be scheduled for weekly or biweekly, run them if they are not.
download a ram manager as well, that might extend your window of usefullness.

Posted by: deb15

kristianway and redwench I appreciate your input, thanks. I do not know what you mean by dial in server. Tapisvr is being used by windows so its not that I am guessing. What on the list suggests dial in server? We have aol and thats all. No internal network.

Posted by: deb15

Explorer still does not show in the dialog box and THIS I can not figure out.

Posted by: redwench

youve probably got some corruptions, including whatever calls explorer.

Posted by: deb15

What can I do about this? Explorer doesn't show in Msconfig either. Is it supposed to?

Posted by: redwench

nope, its not supposed to. the scan disk might be able to repair it.

Posted by: deb15

Have run scan disk, defragged, runvirus scans and spyware scans. It shows nothing.

Posted by: deb15

And I am still unsure of what kristianway meant by dial in server installed.

is there anything you need to keep on c: ? If not (or you can move it all off c I sugest re-install from CD ROM
- oh win98 CD's didn't self boot did they ?
- OK, make a boot floppy with CD support - boot from it and check you can see the CD-ROM - then fdisk, format & sys C:, cd to CD-ROM and run install.exe ..
Good luck !

Do you have any idea what Rundll32 is running? I have this too, and I've found that if I kill the Rundll32 process, the resource problem goes away. Kill it as soon as you boot up. Do you also have problems getting things to start (e.g. click on a desktop icon, nothing happens)? This kill seems to fix that too.
I can't find anything about MRCI.vxd, and I get the same load failure. The system also has a lot of memory leakage. And every time it boots up, I get the message about Setup updating the system, as if I had just installed something before the system last went down. Is it just us, or is W98 not working very well? Doesn't it make you want to start all over with a clean install? How long has it been since you did this? For my system, I think stuff goes back to Win 3.1 and DOS 3.3!

A MRCI (Microsoft Real-Time Compression Interface) is a program like DRVSPACE or DBLSPACE that is used to compress data on your hard drive. If don't use any sort of disk compression then you shouldn't worry about the error message.

RunDll32 loads DLL's into memory so they can be used like applications. Although stopping RunDll32 may fix the problem, whatever is calling for RunDll32 is most likely the cause of the leak. Check your autoexec.bat and startup list for any unusual entries.

Posted by: cplusman

I've checked Autoexec, Config, System.ini, Win.ini, the registry - I can't find anything that looks really out of place. Of course, the registry is beyond comprehension, once you get into the hex classes.

I tried to get rid of DrvSpace and DblSpace, but my WD drives seem to need them for some kind of BIOS helper routines. I have no idea why.
