Do you like AMD or INTEL CPU's?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is just a poll to see which of you like what cpu best.

Posted by: MatinatorX

Please give reasons for your choice. I like AMD better because they host the sturdy OPTERON processors, and they favour compatibility.

Posted by: DemonBob

Sorry, well my reason is simply because of affordability, they are gerenaly alot cheaper, and thier preformance is not all that bad. I'd rather save a few bucks on a processor, and use those few bucks on a high end video card or something simliar.

Posted by: MatinatorX

Yes I agree, I own an Athalon XP 2400 and iw is still a very competetive processor, yet in is only about 100$ (Canadian!)

Posted by: Ocean

are we comparing the processor lines as a whole for general mainstream usage? like p4 vs xp or:

the power players of each group? p4ee v amd64

Posted by: taco_fox

I like AMD.. mostly because of the price like DemonBob said. A small reason is because they've used Socket A for so long. I've flip-flopped between new motherboards and new CPUs so many times.. I'm actually planning on getting a couple of new XP-M chips along with a motherboard tomorrow.

AMD; all the Pcs ive ever had (4 in all ) were AMD. Much cheaper too!

Posted by: Bix VT

I buy AMDs for the cheap price, but I prefer the P4C line, generally. However, my ideal gaming pc would have an AMD FX-53 in it. So I guess it depends. I would be AMD all the way if they still had unlocked multipliers.

I've had alot better luck with intel chips myself. Yeah, AMD might be cheap, but since I've owned a few myself, I go along the idea; "You get what you pay for."

Personally, I'm going back to intel as soon as the funding allows for it heh.

Posted by: redwench

depends on the purpose, and which specific models youre talking about.

Posted by: MatinatorX

The models dont matter, just the basic make and quality. If you have to compare models, just use the newest chips, the P4 chip and the newest Athalon 64 bit processor.

Aww c'mon people. 83 views and only 7 votes?

Posted by: Bix VT

Perhaps we should do an Nvidia vs ATi poll...

Posted by: MatinatorX

perhaps
maybe I'll start one

Posted by: redwench

what i would use for a home gaming computer and what i would use for a large server are 2 different things. the question needs to be more specific.

Posted by: MatinatorX

Ok fine. Home gaming computer.

Posted by: Taliban

I like the Intel, i have one, use it everyday, but, you know? for gamming, the best choice is what MatinatorX says, an AMD, and when i get enough cash i will get one,

AMD + Nvidia = GG forever.

Posted by: MatinatorX

What is GG forever? Lol

Posted by: Ack1027

Eh sorry, starcraft game term. GG is good game. Usually typed at the end of a match to show good manner.

Posted by: Bix VT

Not only starcraft but most online games I have played people will type gg at the end of a round/match/fight/whatever.

Posted by: The-AoD

And people thought "uber" was overused.

Posted by: Bix VT

Hey. You can NEVER overuse uber.

Posted by: Ack1027

Yeah true, I use uber in daily speech.

GG is used in many many many games, but Starcraft was the first to come to my mind because that's the game I play most ^^

Bix what's your SC sn? Maybe we can play sometime? You play broodwar? How long have you been playing/how much are you on a week.

Just thought I'd play with some people here and meet new gamers.

PM me or something.

Posted by: MatinatorX

Yeah I know what GG is because I play worms armageddon. I was just wondering if it meant sumthing else.

Posted by: Arunan

AMD...because of their cheapness, I have close to 20 servers in a server farm built of AMDs because it was so cheap.

Posted by: SKYHN

Ive had a P4 for the last 3 years. Its been alright, but next system Im going with an AMD processor. Their price/performance ratio has sold me. I wouldnt touch the 64 though, too expensive. Ive also got a P3 and a P4m in my laptops, I got them because they had much better power management at the time. AMD has come a long way with their mobile chips though, and I would probably get an AMD in my next one, but that Pentium M is very nice.

Posted by: The-AoD

I do like those centrino's myself too. When/if I get a laptop, It's gonna have one of those most definetly.

Posted by: Bix VT

One question: I know the centrinos have real good power saving features and all that but...how do they perform? I need a laptop that will run BF1942 decently, and right now I'm running a P4B 2.8 with a 64meg mobile ATi card, and it's a bit slow. Now I've heard conflicting reports that the speed of the centrino is better than the mobile P4? But mainly, what would be a laptop that could run BF1942 at around 30fps in 800x600 res?

Posted by: The-AoD

Well, laptops aren't made for gaming in all respect. But the 1.8M my cousin had was quite impressive. It'd play Ut2k3 rather nicely with some GeForceGO chipset in it. Wasn't as grand as my desktop, but what can you expect from a laptop. And man, that thing lasted forever on a single charge. He brought down two charged batteries, and didn't have to charge even once on his 4 day visit.

Though, I was more or less stuck on the fact that his laptop could outperform my XP 1700+ hehe. But I will say, for a laptop, it was quite impressive.

These are the stats I remember.

Intel Centrino M @ 1.8Ghz
512mb Ram (No idea on speed)
40gb internal drive
hot swap type bay for cd/dvd/rom-burner and hard drives
One of those ultra cool finger pad mice.
S-Video out that worked!
The nVidia GeForce2Go? Or something of the sort
Windows XP Pro

I enjoy playing with different systems to learn more and more; and that was one of the most amazing laptops I've seen. We tested the S-Video crap on my dad's television, and amazingly it worked, and it worked correctly on the first try. I was stunned, even my GeForce 4 with S-Video out took some working around to get everything working properly.

Would it run BF1942? I can ask him. As a matter of fact, I'll drop him an email, I haven't talked to him in a while anyways. Too bad he's like 100% anti-IM clients. lol

Posted by: Bix VT

Thr ram was probably 2100, I think that the Centrino operated on a 400fsb. And decent UT2k3? On a GF2? not bad.

Posted by: Yuneek

Intel, for reliability and past experiences.

Posted by: armystud0911

I have dual xeons but I thats just cuz I got them for very cheap on my workstation. When I build my first gaming computer, I will prolly put an AMD in it cuz they are so inexpensive.

Posted by: The-AoD

He still hasn't replied to my email, I may just call him about it tommorow

But, his sister, Lori, has a centrino in her and her husbands laptop, and he plays BF1942 on it, and she says he has no complaints. But she's an AOL Broadband user, so.. :P Not to smart in the computers, but I'm sure kirk would know.
