Ummm.... My computer is crappy??

Hey there...
Okay, basically my computer is screwing up and... well you get the gist (same old crap as everybody else). Basically whenever I try to run a direct3d application (I'm pretty sure opengl does it to, although I haven't tried it with a pure opengl app yet), the computer freezes and a high pitched noise is emitted from the speakers. I bought a new video card, [ASUS geforce fx v9980 ultra (geforce fx 5950... in fact, I'll spare you from reading all the crap and just give you my system specs...
AMD athlon xp 1700+
Asus A7A266-E (motherboard)
Asus Geforce fx v9980 ultra
Creative soundblaster audigy
512mb ddr ram
80gb hard disk
DirectX 9.0b (retail)
Windows XP Professional
Now here are all the things I have tried to fix it...
Flashed the bios
Installed the latest drivers for the soundblaster audigy
Installed the nvidia reference drivers for the video card
Installed the asus enhanced the driver set for the video card (I did remember to uninstall the reference drivers first)
Tried alternating between either stick of ram (i know that ram can be shifty)
Tried the debug version of directX 9.0b
Installed the latest Ali chipset drivers for the motherboard
Screwed around with the bios a bit in an attempt to fix it
Tried formatting the hard drive, reinstalling windows and doing all of the above again
Tried switching pci ports for each of the pci cards
Tried reconnecting all of the cables
Upgraded all the software suites that came with the respective cards
Just to be crazy, I tried using the audigy 2 drivers and software instead (trust me, it does make the sound better, but it didn't fix the computer
There is one thing which would most likely be causing the problem, that is, the AGP 8x video card with the agp 4x motherboard. In the nvidia agp 8x specs, it does say that 8x cards are compatable in agp 4x slots, but... well, you never know.
Well... that's pretty much all that I can think of off the top of my head. It's damn annoying. If any of you can think of a way to fix it, well then I will include you in my will and donate organs without hesitation just for you . If none of you can do it for free, then I'll just pay the 50 damn bucks to get it serviced.

8x/4x is fine.
remove the sound card, and any pci cards you dont neeed for testing. keep the slot below the agp free. if you have multiple ide devices, keep a hard drive and 1 cd drive, disconnect the rest. then give it a whirl again, with whatever program causes this. if its still freezing, download and run sisoftsandra.

THAT is a crappy computer system?!?!?!? Are you kidding me? Jeez you make me feel like mine is a pile of crap. [ Which I worked hard to get ] That's a really decent system unless you are a really hardcore gamer/artist/media producer.
My first computer I ever made is the one I'm using now except with different parts I upgraded. Originally it consisted of.
Athlon XP 2400+
Gigabyte GA7DXE mobo
40 Gig Hard drive
256 Generic [ Yay! ] ram
Soundcard from an old HP I had to pull out
GeForce4 Mx440
Windows ME
And a very good sound system but, I got it outside of the country [USA]
But anyway, Try doing what Redwench said. That seems logical to me too.

AHHH ME??? Ditch Windows ME as soon as you have the $91 bucks to spare man, it sucks like nothing else.

Hey, I think it might be the fact that I only have a 350W psu. I now have a 40gb hard drive hooked up as well. What do you think I should upgrade the PSU to (if you think I need to, if not, tell me. I have already spent to much freaking money trying to get this thing to work)?

If it's generic brand, then you probably need to replace it. If it's a nice brand like Antec, then you should be ok, but 400W+ would be reccomended, especially with a gfx card like that.

ditto.
if its not antec/fortron/sparkle (other high brands are hard to find), that could indeed be your problem. an antec etc rated at 350 should be ok however.
should you need to upgrade, antec smart power 400W min, higher would be a good idea. it will be able to control your case fans for you, which will be an issue with that setup

Mister man> the symptoms you described are ALSO typically caused by overheating (of the CPU/GPU)...

Yeah, but if it is the GPU or CPU overheating, isn't there graphical abberation before it freezes? (such as lines going across the screen, etc.). I had the geforce monitor thing (the one that comes with the nvidia drivers) open as well, and the temperature never exceeded approx. 64 degrees celsius. As far as cpu goes, I went into the monitor thing in the cmos, and the cpu and motherboard temperatures were about what they normally are.
The reason that I think that it might be the PSU is that other people on the internet have been having a similar problem, and some other people recommended getting a 400W+ psu. I mean, I have got my computer hooked up to two hard drives, two cd drives, one floppy disk drive and the video card and all the rest of the crap, it just seems like a bit of a drain on power.
Ummm... yeah, thanks for helping me people. 's been good.

No, in cases of GPU overheating the image freezing can sometimes if not often occur suddenly without any visible prior signs (not even 0.0001 femtoseconds before the crash ). Trust me on this one
Of course, getting a more powerful (and non-generic) PSU won't hurt..

Yeah with all that stuff on your psu, I think it's the culprit. Get a 400watt min Antec or like name-brand psu.

Sorry about reviving this, I know it's been dead for a long time. The guy at the computer store actually lent me a 450 watt psu and that didn't fix the problem. As such, I've pretty much tried everything to fix it (see the list above). Crap this is annoying me. I've ruled out the motherboard being screwed since a Geforce 4 mx (I know the two are pretty different) worked fine when it was lent to me (even with the 350W psu).
So, what now?
...Guys?
