ssh tunneling??

hi all,

A brief bit of background, I work for a charity in the UK and we are situated in a posh building built for the millennium as subsidised tennants. We are on a bulding wide network with an awesomly fast internet connecion and also have connection to the City Councils internet and intranet services.

Sounds great on paper... What i have become increasingly fustrated at is given our subsidised position our requirements are taken less seriously than some of the larger tenants, and ths is especially true when it comes to IT issues.

Primarily our access to the outside world is severely locked down, we have http access through port 8080 but thats just about it. this is a problem as I have 2 of our own websites, an intranet and another charities site to maintain as part of my job, essentially Im having to do the design at work without the chance for testing and then go home and upload the new code after work. Its incredibly fustrating, and the organisations that are in control of the networks simply dont seem interested in helping out.

I was at a loss ntil a techie friend mentioned ssh tunneling, and the idea that by using my machine at home as a kind of connection I could effectively ftp through the http port from my work machine. Unfortunately neither myself, my techie mate or gogle seem to understand the whole concept in basic enough terms to make any use of it.

anyone able to offer any advice or ideas??

m.

Yes. Goto ssh.com to read more, and to download.

Maybe you won't even get this, it was posted 4 months ago... :P

Cheers!
