Dust in my Computer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

Hi all,
ok, i took the biggest step of my life using a PC; i opened the case by myself . In any case i found a CRAPLOAD of dust in it and i dont know how to get rid of the duist. The thign is i am scared that i will mess something up.

i want to knwo if;

1) there is a Magic Wnd i can buy to get rid of all the dust or
2) in the event that there isnt, how do i get rid of it?

someone suggested using a vaum cleaner btu the inside of a PC looks so fragile!!!

Posted by: taco_fox

take it outside and spray it with compressed air (the kind you get in a can)

Posted by: Tecil

Most computer shops or office supply stores sell canned air. Pick up a couple of cans and give it a good blow out.

Blow it out, outside preferably, and make sure not to turn the canned air upside down.

Vacuum cleaners are not recommended unless it is anti-static certified. Which most of your run of the mill home and shop vacs are not. They do make vacuums specifically for computers/electronics but they tend to be spendy for what they are.

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

Hmm, so no Magic Wands huh? OK thansk a lot for the advice though.

Posted by: redwench

heatsinks can be cleaned by any method, including the dishwasher.

fans and the inside of the case can get a damp cloth treatment.

compressed air or a soft makeup/artists brush can be used on anything else.

Posted by: armystud0911

I wouldn't be just too worried about touching it, just remember that its a very precise peice of technology and respect that. Don't go ripping stuff apart, just handle it all gently and everything should work out fine.

Posted by: quiksilver87

what improvements would removing the dust do??

Posted by: redwench

for the most part, improves heat transfer.

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

Ive decide3d to go at it with an old toothbrush. I will jsut go about it very carefully.

On the other hand, i have to admit that the sight of the inside of a PC was quite exciting. Right now its open and i am jsut looking at the names of all the parts. i have finally decided that it may nto be so daunting to build my own PC after all. Prolly do it over the summer when the semester ends .

Umm, is the april Fools thing over or am i just having bad luck at typing...i make so many mistakes

toothbrush is a tad firm, at least for anything besides the heatsinks and fans. those are impossible to damage.

Posted by: Bix VT

I'd just get real close with the compressed air for the most part, but using a damp cloth on the fans would be good. I don't know if your pc has real bad heat problems, but you probably dont need to worry about the cpu heatsink.

lol...Bunmiadefisayo: you can always go back and edit posts you know...

And you should change your name to flanders. Because Bunmiadefisayo is really long and hard to remember.

Posted by: AOTY2KB

I'm surprised none of you own an air compressor. I just take my little 2 gallon Campbell Hausfeld and blow the case clean. Dad got it for less than $100 CDN at Canadian Tire.

Posted by: madman55

dont worry about damaging your pc by touching the indide hardware. you can just use your finger or paper towel to get most of the dust out of your computer. i did that on my dell one time, and nothing broke.

Along with what Redwench said, I think it also affects the performance [ Depending on the specific hardware ] because something about the dust vibrating on the piece of hardware. I'm not really sure, but my cousin once told me about it. He's GT graduate and helped make my comp so I guess we can trust him ^_^. You don't need ALL the dust off, but it's just nice to have it clean.

Posted by: AOTY2KB

that and the safety element, fire hazard

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

I also heard that it will overheat the PC if dust accumulates.

Posted by: redwench

really? how surprising.......

It may not actaully be that the slightest thing sets her off, i beleive she may be one of those people who hate stating already ehat may be obviously obvious .

Example- i said dust causes overheating and she says (sarcastically if i might add) she's surprised. I guesss thats a polite way of saying "duh!"

Precisely, that's +- what I said

She MUST be a slayer. Definitely.

While redwench may be a superior entity, it may be a bit drastic to refer to her as the "borg queen"...she's not bend on dominating the universe as far as I know, and I wouldn't say she's quite that evil...

hmm...do you think the borg got thier unfounded sense of superiority from the few frenchies they assimilated?

hehe - they at least were deemed worth assimilating http://213.246.40.109/images/kaola.gif

ps. was it your wish - to integrate the collective?

pps. I liked the borg queen - quite attractive, if not for all this cyber-garb

Posted by: IceBreaker

mm...an enlightened one, I presume?
I applaude your insight. Yes, now I guess we'll never know. What a pity (...)

But take heed: I never lied. I said I live & study in France and that's the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth http://fileforums.com/images/icons/icon11.gif

Now watching peoples' imaginations wander astray, yes that can be quite amusing. Who would want to contradict them.. http://forum.msi.com.tw/images/msi/smilies/biggrin.gif

As for the smileys...you will learn - in due time.

you definately got off a good one there Ice, however...I might point out the the majority of those terrans assimilated weren't french...I think they got Jean-Luc and then decided they were better than everyone...why they ever wanted him back is beyond me, he's all talk and no shoot. *coughs* gee, sound like the french to you?

I wasn't really fond of the borg queen...the whole no hair thing was kinda wierd. I would hope, for her sake at least, that redwench is better looking

Posted by: IceBreaker

Bah I won't complain much. Double nationality has its benefits (Say, I AM French btw - on paper: that's what counts, right? )

And you know what they say - when in Rome do as the Romans do

Yes they do talk a lot but they make good wine & AS LONG AS I get my state paid healthcare, housing benefits & student scholarship i won't complain, guess I even owe them something hehe..

Well maybe the best things come in fewer quantities?

And don't you ditch my JL Picard; though I prefer W.T. Kirk, Jean-Luc also saved the universe on countless occasions & as Locutus was even strong-willed enough to resist borg assimilation

I liked JL's ex-girlfriend too (not that I had a "Crush" on her, but..)

The queen looked quite good. Yes the lack of hair was a pity though.. As for 7/9 mmm.. http://213.246.40.109/images/perso/marsufloribus.gif

Oh, and about Redwench - well check out the number of posts & their rate - she MUST be having some sort of borg implants to be able to achieve that http://213.246.40.109/images/perso/ddt.gif

Posted by: redwench

well, i have hair. quite a bit actually. want some?

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

Interesting! Yo Bix, from al your posts i am assumiong we'll soon see a Redwench fan club soon eh?

Posted by: Bix VT

whoo...Jeri Ryan was amazing in Voyager (my favorite ST series) although Janeway wasn't too ugly herself...

Jean-Luc should have been the captain of a science vessal, not a Galaxy class battlecruiser. He was a wimp. I much prefer Kirk and Janeway.

BTW, isn't it J.T. kirk, not W.T.? It is James Tiberius unless I'm mistaken...darn it, where's trekpsycho when you need him?

redwench:...I hope you're not overly hairy...

Posted by: redwench

depends on your definition of overly, doesnt it?

muahahahahaha

Posted by: NyGulkuk

She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low
Don't ask me why
Don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
Darling

Gimme a head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined
Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair
