stacked 2 cds in burner -- aaack!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I stacked a second cd into my laCie external burner (not realizing one was already loaded). When I pushed in the drawer the burner made a nasty sound and then stopped.

I removed cds and said "DOH!".

Now the fan works, but nothing else. Is there any real possibility that by opening it up, I may be able to get it working again. ie. is there much chance of an easy repair (something just needs a poke with a toothpick) for a novice.

Thank you.

Sure, there is always a chance, but most likely not. I personally would open it just for kicks to see but would probibly be clueless how to put it back together again! The nasty sound was prolly cuz you did some serious damage to your burner.

So you don't know what I'm going to see inside either -- right?

nasty sounds = not good
if the cds didnt get stuck or anything, id say you killed the motor. at this point, really no harm to be done by opening it up and seeing if theres just something wedged in there. its not going to fix itself, and getting it repaired is probably more than its worth.

Thanks for your opinions. True -- it hasn't fixed itself over the past week and probably won't improve with age.
Hand me my trusty bludgeon; I'm going in for a look.

What speed is it? If its pretty slow, just get a new one. CD Burners are dirt cheap now. 52x LiteOn is $35ish.

It'd be a good idea to jsut replace it...

www.newegg.com is great for burners, and everythign else of course.

Amazingly, all it wanted was some tough love. I took it apart -- as far as I could, which involved a certain amount of light jarring to get interlocking sections apart. Got the wires reconnected, plugged it in and whirrrr.
Put it back together and only ended up with one extra screw!
Anyway, it basically is working, BUT the backup dvd's that I burned have had some slight problems that required running DiskDoctor or DiskWarrior to repair. Still, I preferred the investment of 2 hrs (one to find and register on this forum, one to tear up the burner) instead of dropping another $350 right away. Thanks to all for encouragement.
