I have a 3 year old Compaq Presario. Couple of days back I was on internet and all of a sudden my screen went blank with cursor blinking on the top left. I went on compaq tech support site and found similar problem, solution to which was to switch off PC, disconnect IDE cable, reconnect IDE cable, and switch power on again. On doing that now I am getting a message "Hard drive imminent error" with 2 blue boxes on bottom of screen; one with "F1 BOOT" and other with "F10 System set up" messages. Nothing happens on pressing these 2 keys. What should I do now.

id say buy a new hard drive.
however, you can remove it, and place it as a slave in another computer and run diagnostics on it. that is if it can be read.

Yes I agree, especially if it made noices, it is less trouble to fit new hard driver. Remember always to do as many backups while systen is working OK. Recommend to partitioning hard dirver at least to two partitions so that you save everything important to the last partition, i.e letters, images, music etc. I have 3 operation system and use the Win ME on the C as emergency only, main partition is D with Win 2000 Pro and then for Win XP Pro E partition for other programs and the last F is used to store important data. Also I use Knoppix LINUX to rescue data from failed operation systems. I have noticed that depending of use hard drivers fail in 5 years, because of either spindel motor or disk surface failure.
