Help with a Gateway 2000
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

It's a simple question... I couldn't figure it out by myself mainly because I had the computer for a short time and in the midst of fixing other things, formatting and shit, I didn't try hard enough to find out the motherboard brand or number...
I need to know what type of ram this uses.
Pentium 166
Gateway 2000
32MB RAM currently in two slots (I imagine it's 2 16MB's obviously)
I am not sure if anyone would be able to tell from that information, but if by any chance anyone has this same computer, could you find out for me?

CPU-Z, memory tab

Based on the processor, I would guess its EDO.
It probably says on the ram sticks themselves on a sticker or something.

Doesn't work, tried it. It only says 32MB, the rest it is unable to read.

I found the manual online...
Quote:
Main Memory
· Two 168-pin DIMM sockets
· Support for up to 128 MB of Extended Data Out (EDO) or fast page DRAM, or 64 MB of synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)

What does EDO mean? Sorry, wasn't around this era and Google didn't help me much. I'm not sure what that means. Would it simply work if I bought PC66 SDRAM? Or does that EDO thing mean anything? And does that mean I can only have up to 128MB total ram or 64MB? How much per slot?

If you have your computer's serial number, you may be able to find out from Gateway's web site.

Nah, I asked my friend to give me the CPU-Z HTML Report and figured out the Motherboard from there. I found out what I wrote at the post above.

It looks like you can only go up to 128 dram. EDO is Extended Data Out. From your post, it looks like you can use sdram, but it may only recognize 64 mb. Check out this

And may be Kingston . Cruise around the site awhile. You can search by memory type.

Bought that. Figured out from the manual I can have up to 64MB SDRAM or 128MB EDO RAM, you were right on that one. So I bought two 32MB since it will only recognize up to 32MB in each DIMM.
Thanks for your help there.
