Impossible problem

I have a problem with my second computer which makes no sense at all.

Last week, I entered my computer room to discover both my main PC and my netwroked 2nd box had crashed. The main box started again without hiccup, but I couldn't get the 2nd box to come on properly. Here is what happened, and here is what I have tried so far (spec to follow):

Box 2 powered up, but monitor would not activate. Drives (hard drives and CD/DVD) seem to be working but hard to tell with no visual. Floppy does not appear to be working.

1 - tried alternate monitor
2 - tried alternate GFX card
3 -tried alternate RAM
4 - tried alternate CPU
5 - tried alternate mainboard
6 - disconnected all drives and tried to fire it up
7 - replaced monitor , CPU, mboard, ram, GFX

The fault persists. The monitor just will not activate. I tested the monitor and the GFX in Box 1 and they work. This does not make any sense at all and I am at a loss. Any help or advice would be most welcome.

Spec of box 2:

AMD 2200 on Asus A7V333
2 x 256 DDR 266
GeForce 4600i
20GB Matrox HDD master
40 GB HDD slave
CD-Writer
DVD-ROM
400W PSU
running windows 98

as the only thing you didnt switch is the power supply.......

Posted by: Sgian

Ah so sorry, forgot to mention....swapped out psu too....

As redwench said, switch the power supply. But also, you may want to check your ram and cpu in the other pc as well.

RAM works fine in box 1...didn't try CPU in there, but wouldn't it be a bit strange that TWO CPUs have failed? (I have 3 CPUs - AMD3000 in box 1, AMD2200 in box 2, and a spare AMD 1600) Both the 2200 and the 1600 have been tried in 2 different mboards without success.

Do I understand that you PC doesn't even go trhough the POST, power on self test? If not then you have serious problem wiht your motheroard, I would suspect failure of the 'Chipsets', well similar did happen with one of my client.
If your PC does perform the POST can you hear see anything during that time, beeb code?
If the POST is visible on the screen then you might have HDD failure.
Well HDD failure allows POST but no booting.

PC won't go thru post...won't even click the monitor on. Fans come on, DVD and CD roms both power up, and accept discs...but no post, no screen. I thought it was the mboard, but tried swapping that out for a spare I have and still no joy.

Fuse is ok.

probably something to do with the case then, or the cpu is overheating.

Posted by: Sgian

Cleaned off CPU and re-attached fan using thermal paste. No joy.

What could it be to do with the case?

BTW, thanks for all the suggestions, every one is appreciated. Hopefully one will solve this riddle. Please keep suggesting things, even if it sounds unconnected. At this stage, I'll try anything.

Another long shot, check the earthing contacts of the motherboard.
If no earthing no power goes through, fixed that kind problems with MAC computers, usually problem with the earthing screws on the display board or even on the motherboard connectin to the chassy.
I also fix similar problems on TV sets.

try one of those voodooo rituals....start a fire and dance round it....

JOKING!!! but u never know hahaha

u know its always best to laugh in these situations...I did..i built my pc and the following things happened which delayed my building process..

PSU, Dodgy Mobo, Graphics Card, Hard Drive, Over heating problem and finally one of the 4 dimms of memory i have is damaged..but i cant bothered to fix that!

Anyway best keep on smiling, u'll be laughing, when u find out its some stinking little thing casuing this problem

Definitely sounds the right thing to do, that problems seem out of this World.

there could be a short in the case, either in itself or with the motherboard. its rather unusual for it to suddenly pop up, but it does happen. did you get some thermal crap on the mobo when you changed cpus? you could also have shorted the testing mobo, and the original one is indeed dead.
did you check to see if the cpu fan is indeed running while powered?

arent you glad you asked?
