Network

I have a PC and a lap top notebook. Is it possible to link or network them so that I can use the files in my PC on my lap top?

The PC does not have ethernet, lap top does.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can. Just hardwire them with an ethernet cord and make sure they both contain ethernet cards. Then you should be able to send files through from PC to laptop or vice versa.

PC does not have ethernet connection, lap top does.

That's why you buy an ethernet card and plug it into an empty PCI slot.

If your PC and laptop both have Firewire, you can network that way. I doubt your PC would if it doesn't have Ethernet, though (unless you have a SB Audigy). If you don't want to install an Ethernet card in your PC, you can buy a USB Ethernet adapter for pretty cheap (I got one free after rebates once). Other than that, I can't think of anything. Doesn't mean there's no other ways, though.

Gazornenplat, how would I hook the LAN via 1394a or USB 2.0?

What you need to network 2 pcs is: each pc needs an ethernet card. you need a hub. you take 2 ethernet cables, one goes from the laptop to the hub, and one goes from the desktop to the hub. then you just need to make sure that you have file and print sharing enabled, etc.

unless it is a matter of just simply sharing files, where you would just use a cross wired cable to do the job

AOTY2KB,

All you need is the appropriate cable and the right OS. For USB 2.0, Win98 SE or later will work fine. Firewire, on the other hand, needs at least ME but XP is preffered. Here's some links for where to get the cables (and a little info about the cables).

Firewire (400Mbps): http://www.firewirestuff.com/cables1.html

USB 2.0 (480Mbps also available for 1.1, but much slower): http://products.consumerguide.com/c...ex.cfm/id/26241

You can link multiple PCs with Firewire, provided you have multiple ports on the same PC. Also, for Firewire, make sure that the cable is 15 feet or less.

SHAR824,

In my above explanation, I just realized that the USB cable is probably what you need. If your PC doesn't have USB (or Firewire), you're probably going to have to get an ethernet card. Even if you have old USB, it will still work fine (just slower).

AOTY2KB: very true, but if an upgrade to 3 pcs is ever needed...well you'll need a hub. Easier to set up as well.
