Virus Bastard
I have the most annoying virus I have ever seen. I think I have it under control right now, but it has disabled any .exe, .bat etc files from opening directly. I can go to my docs and click on a saved file and it will start the app, but I can't start any apps by clicking on them.
It has the same message every time, no matter which file I click on. Cant find "path' to the file you just pathed to and clicked on.
I have been 5 days getting this thing under control. It was telling me I needed "document.exe" to open files. Never heard of document.exe and it is not on my machine. Is there such a file???
When I put the XP disk in and try to reinstall XP, the install program won't run.
Nothing on my computer that might help get the problem solved will run. I can't get to the my computer properties to turn off restore. I can't get the install disk to run.
Any ideas???
Thanks,

I assume you have tried online scans etc.?
Have you identified the virus?

Do not install any software until you have ridded your system of the virus and applied any fixes that may be available.

First, turn off System Restore:
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box
Click Apply. The following message appears:
As noted in the message, this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
Click OK.
Then go to TrendMicro's Housecall free online virus scanner. Run it and follow its suggestions. It should remove the virus for you.

HI There,
I have tried everything you mentioned. I can't get properties for "My Computer" to open, so I can't turn off system restore. I know the need, but, I can't find a way.

All is well. I did not have to reformat. Several virus scans with several different programs and some creative registry editing managed to get control again. The only LOST files is helpctr.exe. I can live with that and can get it back from the CD.
Thanks all

Congrats. Hope it's smooth sailing from here.
Sounded like an annoying POS virus.
