usb port

I am trying to install an adapter card, the instrutions state that i should use the connector that came with product and install one end into the adapter card(linksys) and another into the usb port ..when i install into usb port i get a message saying system cannot detect port...however this is the same port that i had the modem wire plugged into....what could be the problem?
