sending or saving to files floppy

Hi, when i email a word or excel doc to work it won't open. it says to check the correct file name and does it have .doc extension. checked and it does. checked original file and it is set to archive. I sometimes get 'asked' to check my network connection. Did I read somewhere about shared files - is that an issue?
Don't know if this is connected but - my son recently re-installed win98 for me and when he tried to find the My Docs folder on the other drive he saved old info on, he couldn't find it. eventually sussed it HAD been marked a 'hidden' folder i.e when we changed to 'show all files' it appeared and we moved it over to new drive. within the My Docs folder some of the folders are shaded out, but even if I email a file from within a folder thats NOT shaded out it still won't open at other end.
this is a real pain because I did loads of work at home that I can't take to work. the same happens if I put files on floppy.
Please help an old man who was brought up using an Abacus!!
I use Win98, IE6

well, first, copy (not move) them into a new folder. see if they are able to be opened there. and make all your files un "hidden", set to read only or archive.

now, can you read the files if you access your email/floppy at home? if so, the programs at work are probably incompatable in some way.
