Excel 2000: "2" inserts into cells randomly during movement

I have a user on our network that has brought up the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. I've actually watched this occur.
He will be working with an Excel document (any Excel) document. He will use either the arrow keys (the actual arrows - not the number pad) or the page up/down keys to navigate through a page. While he is moving through the document, the number 2 will randomly appear in cells throughout the document.
Even more strange - he can e-mail the document to his boss and the "2"s mysteriously go away.
Wow.
