im running win98. ok, firstly i have cured my pc recently from the backdoor/nolor virus.
On most items e.g add/remove programs, windows med plyr, a right click displays 'open with' NOT OPEN! i use run and some items work to open, but add remove programs i need to use to free space, but its impossible. I think maybe the registrys, a virus **** up or possibly a file been deleted out of c:\win\sys or something similar. Ive tried some pieces of advice, like change regedit.exe to regedit.com, changing values, but no luck. The main problem is, programs/items wont open, some not even from run or run command (cmd). So im stuck in quicksand sorta. Also anyone know of an unlimted use (no gimmicks) of a free good firewall, i got one working but free would be good.

Hi there
I would recommend to upgrade win98 to win98SE at least, win98 is full of problems. Backdoor is usually a Trojan i.e part of a 'program' that you have installed. Warning Backdoor like sub7 allows it's writer to access your computer.

When uninstalling programs check if the program has it's own uninstall section, and if not then use Add/Remove Programs.

Do not touch Windows registery if you do not have experience dealing with it, because you can really destroy your OS, recommendable would be to get Reg Cleaner or Norton Systen Works 2002/2004 to do the job or even better find some local PC nerd who will teach you how to deal wit Windows registery.

Free Zone Alarm is good Firewall, have help arround when installing it and connecting the first time to Internet, because wron settins will block you from the Internet.
