Palm V
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just got a Palm V from my aunt who works for the airport... gotta love what people leave behind on the airplanes... (She has retrieved a total of 2 Game Boys and 2 Palms, as well as some other stuff so far; technically the company makes you put it in the lost and found, but no one ever goes looking for stuff they leave behind the airplane so there's no point leaving it unused in the L&F)
Anyway, the Palm came in a metal case which I finally figured out how to remove...
Well anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has a Palm, and if so, what other accessories do you need? (I have just the Palm, even the pen's missing! but my uncle has 2 extra pens so I can have one )

I'd be careful if I were her.
while technicly, no one gives a ****, ocasionally you get someone who's interested, does their research, and starts trying to pin charges on people that do that.
was in one of thoose news shows about a bus line or some idiotic form of travel
may have been trains, probally was that.

Well actually, every worker does it... I understand though. But I consider myself a very... what would you call it, a "moral" person. This doesn't bother me much, considering that what the company does to items in the L&F after a period of time is pawn it away anyway. (also info from family... now that I think of it I think I have like 5 family members working for the airport... from airplane cleaners to engineers to repairers...)
Anyway... I don't really know how to operate this darn thing, so does anyone have any tips? (Like setting in my own name, entries, etc; or what accessories or software to get?)
I did some searching on the 'Net, visited their site... One website was selling a USB HotSync/Charger combo for about 40 bucks... the Palm company site was selling a HotSync/Charger cradle, but it's a serial connector... does anyone know if the one they have at the website includes a electric cord as well?

I am with Bishop. Palm Vs are hot items. Someone is bound to come looking for it and if it is logged and labeled at the airport in their lost and found dept and it does not turn up..an investigation will follow. Reason I say this is that the Palm user is a fanatic. People go crazy when they lose their Palms.
You will need a docking cradle, either USB or Serial. You will also need a desktop software which you can freely download version 4 off of Palms home page here. You may also want to protect the screen using these.
As for answering your questions, I own a Palm IIIXe. If you plan on using it as a laptop for school note taking...get yourself a portable keyboard.
I have one of them and couldn't be happier. I use it for classroom management. I set it up on my desk and keep all my marks etc in there. When I teach a lesson, it is right there. When a student asks for his marks...it is right there. Nice thing about it is that It folds up and can be carried easily with you.
If you want to view word, excel, and other files on the device, get yourself Documents to Go from DataViz
Here are some freeware sites for the Palm
http://www.freewarepalm.com/
http://members.tripod.lycos.nl/~palmtop/
Here is a link to the best Palm freeware out there. I use many of these programs myself. Make sure you get BigClock, it is a must. Just scroll down the following link page to find it.
http://www.mywirelesspalm.com/palmfreeware.htm
By the way, the Palm V only has 2 megs of memory, my Palm IIIXe has 8 megs, so you will have to be careful with very large files such as an English dictionary etc...for you won't have the room for it.
Here is a review of the Palm V.
http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/palmv-review.html
Last but not least, you can download the owners manual in a PDF format right here Just scroll down and take a look on the lower right under "more support options". It is around 200+ pages though.
A word of warning, anything you buy for the Palm V must say designed for Palm V on it. Do not buy anything for the Palm III series for they will not work. All styluses work with any screen but it won't fit the stylus slot on the machine...ok..this goes for they keyboard as well. The docking cradle for the Palm V is also a recharger for the built in rechargable battery.

You can buy the cradle\charger at any accessory shop.
You also need HotSync that can be downloaded off the site I think. It keeps a backup of everything on your desktop.
Everything else is personal preference.
I have a pointer\pen
I have a transparent pad over the screen to keep it anti-scratched.
I have a few addictive games like Pong and Battleship that keep me entertained when I'm waiting or something.
I keep a lot of phone numbers, notes, and the To Do list.
I have a Palm IIIe and a Palm V.
Pretty useful thing.
I also have a little pocket thing to put it in, it has a hard back and front with a velcro thing to hold it together.
I also carry 2 spare batteries for the Palm IIIe and a pen in the pocket thing for both of them.
I use the Palm V mainly at school and Palm IIIe when I'm travelling out of town, usually I lend it to my mom.
Hmm thats about it
And my charger thing is serial, there is a USB version tho.

dearly beloved auntie is gonna end up with a felony record if this keeps up. people do go looking for valuable item when left on airplanes. someone is eventually gonna notice that valuable things dont get found when your aunt is on the job.
i mean, phones, palms, computers, gameboys. these are expensive enough that people do report them missing. shes walking a thin line.
so send that back to LT now.......

Hahaha LT... alright then, ICQ me your mailing addy and we'll sort it out. (I'll send ya some Chinchilla food! )
Thanks for URLs Chaks... and don't worry about my aunt, I think she knows what she's doing... (once again, I have an uncle- a top-ranking engineer who's been working there for years- and he's pretty sure there's no problem with it...)
Anyway... another question. I went onto their website last night... and noticed that the Palm IIIc and the Palm V cost exactly the same... except that the IIIc has all the features of Palm V AND a color screen? If so, shouldn't it be more expensive?
And shouldn't stuff get BETTER as the number goes up? (5 vs 3)

Oh hey Freak, since you have extra batteries...
How the heck do I remove the battery from this thing?

The palm V is the um...er...executive model. You pay for styling and a smaller form factor...and the metal case (take a look at the siz comparison from the review link above). I have several friends who own the V and I think they are nuts. I have an 8 meg IIIXe (they improved the display greatly from the older Palm III) and the size is not that different to warrant the more expensive price that the V goes for..oh well. The V does not have AAA batteries, but a built in rechargeable. Guess you didn't read the review I linked in my previous post (j/k). I use rechargable AAA NiMh batteries for my palm...you don't have a use for them with the Palm V.

Chako is right
The Palm V comes with a rechargable kit, the batteries are internal and rechargable.
I have 2 pocket things, one for my Palm V (with NO extra batteries) and one for my Palm IIIe with batteries.
Palm IIIc is no good (the reviews say) because it drains batteries really quick.
One thing about PDAs, if it drains batteries quick then they would be useless on long hauls like business trips. Besides, you aren't supposed to play games on your PDA .
Get the anti-scratch thing, its really gooood.

AK... we gotta go drinking again sometime lol..... I gotta buy Vince a drink or something. hehehe.

OK I just bought the HotSync/Charger cradle today... I also downloaded the Palm Desktop...
I can't really do anything with the program.
Well I think I need other software for my computer too huh... Hotsync software?

There is no way in hell someone would not come back for a Palm V. Especially someone that uses it a lot.
Personally, I find it hard to imagine the horrible invasion of privacy you've commited. Especially if you read anything that was on the palm.
It's like stealing someones little black book.
I don't like this thread, so I'm locking it.
uh...ok, I recommend you do the right thing and return it to the airport, or perhaps even to the owner (since chances are there was some contact info in the thing somewhere).
Keeping it is theft.
