I have just recently bought warcraft 3 reign of chaos and I just installed it. Everytime I start the game up an error message says this "warcraft 3 was unable to inatialize DirectX. Please ensure you have Directx 8.1 or newer installed and that your display drivers are current." My computer has Windows 98, I have Intel Pentium II, Max 400 MHz, I have 384 MB Ram, I have Directx 8.1, I have ATI 3D Rage Pro (atir3),Chip type:Mach 64:RagePro, I have Approx total Memory:8.0 MB. I meet the reqirments yet I'm still unable to play. Can someone please help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

There is one requirement you do not meet, and that is your video card. Your video card is not supported by the game, and that's why you get that error message about DirectX when you try to play. You will need to get a new video card to play, sorry. For a list of supported and non-supported video cards, go here:

Your video card is in the list of non-supported cards, and it is also quite outdated. Before you buy another game that requires a 3D accelerator, PLEASE read the system requirements.

How much would a video card cost? And what would be the best one for Warcraft?

Well you could get something just to run it like an ATI radeon 7000, that'll cost $38 on newegg and is about that best that I'd get with your computer. There are much better cards on the market but your PC is so old that it would be pointless to even look into them.

If you're now thinking about getting a new video card, I suggest that you save up for a whole new system and include the video card's cost in the total price. I wouldn't bother sticking a new card in the system you have now. A decent video card will probably cost between $100 and $200, and a top-of-the-line card will cost more.
Any video card with an ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce chipset is in my opinion the best choice for Warcraft.

So ATI radeon 7000 is the best choice for my PC? I'm hoping that this will work. I really don't want to waste my money. I would save up for a whole new system but I'm currently saving up for a car. At this moment in my life a car is much more important than a whole new computer.

Yes, you will be able to play the game with that video card.
I honestly think that you will be wasting money if you attempt to upgrade any component in that PC, but if you really want to get a cheapie, low-end video card that is supported by Warcraft III, the Radeon 7000 would be a good choice. I don't know if it's the best choice, but it should do the job. Note that if your computer's motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot (and it probably doesn't), you need to make sure you get a PCI video card.

Well my computer does have a Agp slot so the card should work. I thank you so much for helping solve my problem. I'll update you when I get the video card to tell you if it worked. That will probably be this weekend. Thanks again.

Do you guys think a Matrox millennium could work for warcraft 3? I was able to get one and am unsure whether to try it or not. What do you think?

What model Matrox Millennium card is it? Blizzard has tested the game with the G400, G450 and G550.

Well it was unfortunate but the graphic card did not work. But I did go to Bestbuy today and saw a pretty good priced graphic card called GeForce MX 4000. I was wondering how good this card would be for my DELL optiplex GX1. Would I encounter any problems with this Graphics card?

The game should work fine with that card, and when it comes to the rest of your system, the only considerations you have to make are your motherboard and your power supply. Performance won't be that great, but if you're not picky about it, that card will do the job.
