Download Speeds

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I live in a college dorm and I often get dowload speeds of..
400-800K in the evening (though up to 2500k is not uncommon)
150-500K During the day (but 1100 has been done on several occasions)

However... There are times when it does really odd things, first of all, 3 times now it has been bogged down to the point where all pages ceased to load and aol lost connection. (This was NOT because the server was down though, just being overworked). Secondly, there were several instances when my downloads have gone as fast as 32000K (yes you read that right!)
One time I was downloading Nvidia demos and was pulling in 7 of them at a time each at 3-5Mbps.
Another time I downloaded High def clips off Microsoft. I ordered 11 of them at the same time and each one was moving at 2-5Mbps!

Anyway, go ahead and post some of your connection and download speeds here. I wanna see it all- dial up, DSL, cable, T3 and T1, I have only used dial up and T1 so I don't know a whole lot about the average rates of other services, also specify your ISP if your comfortible.

I use dial up becuase anything else around here is expensive. I usually connect at about 52k (would be higher but the isp is really shitty). I generally download at about 6-10 k. But if I DL with some programs (Like shareaza) I will download at an average speed of 46k (Damn good for dial-up) And since I installed Win XP PRO it is not uncommon for me to download at insane speeds for a 56k connection (in short burts of about 1-3 minutes that is). I have actually downloaded at 116K one time for apprx. 36 seconds. I don't know what is going on but I like it (aside from fearing that something is gonna melt )

AMD Athlon 1600
MSI KM4M-L series mobo
Agere PCI Soft Modem
256mb PC2700 DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 7000 PRO 64mb
60gb Western Digital Hard Drive
Some black case with a buncha vents and a 300w power supply
(NOTE: This comp. is a work in progress.)

For the curious ones here is my mobo.
MSI KM4M-L

Just tested.
3815 Kbps :: 466 KB/sec (12% overhead factored)
I usually get slightly higher scores then that, but it seems they're working on the cable service, since my modem has been resetting itself every 20 minutes or so.

2004-05-07 07:38:25 EST: 4956 / 495
Your download speed : 5075494 bps, or 4956 kbps.
A 619.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 507637 bps, or 495 kbps.

WOW, that is some amazing speed you got cooking there! My average is nothing like that!

Posted by: armystud0911

Well, nevermind I guess mine moves too

What's that about a 5MB barrier and why have I exceeded it?

Posted by: SKYHN

You exceeded the 3mb barrier, not the 5mb.

Let me guess, Optimum Online?

Posted by: armystud0911

Well no I mean, in the past I have exceeded it, my network connection showed 32% while I was DLing all that stuff from microsoft plust that's what all the collective speeds added up to. Is that limit like for each download that you have going and can be exceeded by if you start several? or is just like a mark or something that you can compare your bar with? I never heard of barrier that restricted your downloading to under 5Mbps.

When you run a speed test, you should have nothing else using your connection. No downloads, no uploads, IM progs, etc. They all use up bandwidth, you only have so much bandwidth.

Posted by: armystud0911

Oh ok, right on, yeah I had a P2P running while I tested,

Here's mine...I run Cox Cable.

Seems like the T1 has a big upside on the uploads, but cable competes well on the downloading

Yeah I've notived that I can dl 500k/sec no problem, but when I try to upload, it tops out a lot lower...usually around 35/40k. Is there some way to make your uploads faster?

No, because thats your upload speed. Upload speeds are generally much lower than download speeds. Your speed test for upload would be about 35-40kb/s. The only way to get faster upload is to change your speed plan, or if you know a tech, have them bump it up for you. Either that, or get Fiber(if its available in your area). Sacramento is a about 1 hour from me and they have awesome fiber there, 30000/15000 for like $59.99 a month. Which is about 3840kb/s download and 1920kb/s.

I believe in Illinois or some state over by it they have 30000/30000 fiber for $39.99 a month, and its to the curb residential. That is INSANE.

Posted by: armystud0911

WOW, I never knew fiber was widespread already

Posted by: SKYHN

Its not. Thats only 2 areas. In japan and korea its everywhere, but here its only in a select few cities. I think canada has a good coverage on it right now too.

where might I check to see if I can get it?

Oh, and the reason I asked about upload speed increases was because I had heard tell of a way to increase your dl speed with cable by edit your registry, just wondering if it would effect uploads too. Oh well.

I've seen my dialup download an mp3 at 10kb/s average one time in my entire life. I still have the connection log from winMX to show it. I thought my modem was blowing up or something.

But I average 3.2kb/s. The best I usually see is 3.8kb/s and the worst has been under 0.5kb/s.

28.8k dialup sucks. Least it's a local ISP, and not AOL crap.

Posted by: RAcastClarke

Ha! I have you all beaten!

I have quite possible the WORST connection in the WORLD.

Averages at 1 k...topped out at 4 once, gone down to .1kbps before too.

That is, if it even connects in the first place. CapitalNet sucks. I wish I had something decent, which is why I always feel bad when using the schools internet, which is about 50kbps, then I go home and...ugh!

900Kb down, 127Kb up...

*waits for nova to shit on all of us*

You would have to check in your area. Maybe call your phone company, they could tell you.

Dont use registry edits to increase your download speed. All those do is increase your RWIN. Faster connections need higher RWIN, but if you set it too high, you will get packetloss, which leads to high pings and a bad connection.

Posted by: Bix VT

Ahh, I always wondered how that worked. I haven't done any of those registry mods myself, I was just reading up on increasing my speed one day...thanks for the info
