Bees VS Hornets

30,000 VS 30. Who will win?

How do these nature shows get video like that? Those have got to be expensive cameras.

Posted by: armystud0911

They use microcams with ultra wide angles and macro abilities. I have seen them before, the cams are about three inches long, total including the wide angle/macro adapter and use a special feed to record it on film. It is amazing what kind of things they can do with them, I have an SLR adapter like that which lets me get as close as half an inch from my subject.

Poor bees
Are those hornets gonna be problem someday if they're not already?

eesh what was that tickling feeling on my back?

-(he frantically swats his shoulder, writhing around trying to find the bee that he swore he felt)

Posted by: Bix VT

I never liked hornets...that's just cruel! What did the honey bees ever due to them?

Those camera angles are crazy though...most impressive.

Posted by: armystud0911

My sentiments ezactly on dem NEEVIL HORNETS!!!

Posted by: SKYHN

The honey bees are selfish and dont share that sweet sweet nectar.

I heard the hornets are under investigation though for cruelty towards the few bees they captured after the battle.

Posted by: Bix VT

The honey bees don't know the hornets wanted nectar...besides, the hornets aren't reall there for the nectar...they want to eat the bees young! Dispicable...

Posted by: armystud0911

Umm yeah but they hornets want to eat their sweet sweet children not just the nectar, lol. Its about time we put the smack down on those hornets though, 30,000 civilian deaths on behalf of the bees is just unreasonable. We should start a movement to get those hornets behind bars, I don't want them lurking about on my turf. Plus they're just freaky, I haven't seen one in real life but they were ENORMOUS in that video!

Look at this Bix guy, all saying the same thing I do but before me!
lol

Yeah I noted the size of the hornets as well...plus the video called them "giant hornets" ...sounds to me like these bees could be weapons of mass terror (at least for me) and we should take them out now!

Posted by: armystud0911

Yeah that should be the selling point of this presidential campaign! Who will get rid of the GIANT HORNET TERRORISTS!

Posted by: IceBreaker

The video link no longer works http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/perso/ecco.gif

Anyways, hornets are just giant wasps.

A lot meaner though.

Like wasps they can sting multiple times.

Bees on the other hand leave their stings behind - but the sting continues to dig deeper & pump its poison into the wound.

So which of the 2 are meaner, go figure (oh and SKYHN if the hornets are found guilty, what to they risk - dismemberment? )

BTW, the Hornet also has Vertical Take-Off & Landing capabilities, giving it another headstart during battle:

Posted by: armystud0911

It's cool Icebreaker, not all of us hate the puns.

Anyways, still can't get the link to work. Something wrong here...

Posted by: Bix VT

I don't hate the puns, they are just some of the worst I have ever heard...groan factor being like a 9.

Posted by: IceBreaker

HA! Says YOU.
And at least I try

Besides groaning doesn't mean anything; you can laugh your guts out then groan for the chest pains

FLASH NEWS: the link works - I switched to standard mplayer2.exe & had to download an extra codec.

Thanks for the link SKYHN!

I saw a 10 minute or so clip on those same Giant Hornets on TV, mighta been discovery channel. They are nuts, the guy actually went into the area w/ them and he said they were so loud since they are so big.

Crazy things they are, keep 'em away!

Posted by: AOTY2KB

I believe your mistaken Ice, the F/A 18 Hornet does not have VTOL capabilities, the Harrier does.

Yes - and I was damn well aware of that - I was just hoping no one else would take notice.

But YOU did. Thanks a lot for putting a damper grrr http://www.fintoys.net/yabb/yabbima...es/furious3.gif

Posted by: SKYHN

The hornets wont be dismembered. They will be sent on paid leave.

Posted by: IceBreaker

Now that's a "sting" in the tail..

Stop hijacking threads.

i think its a contest bk, to see who can get more post deleted bix or ice

Posted by: Bix VT

For the record: Bix has realized the error of his ways.

But my previous question still stands: (and I truly believe it to be on-topic) How big are these things?

Posted by: AltronHGX

The hornets need to be banned.

They clearly rushed the European Bee base before they had their factories up--hell, they didn't even upgrade their stingers before the Hornets rushed. They then proceeded to leech on their resources before the Europeans bees could expand!

Don't even get me started on the scout trick they used.

I bet they used map hack....

So has Icebreaker.

And IMVHO, I think he's a great man http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/ange.gif

I'm sure he'll agree..

As for your question:

Hornets measure between 2.5 & 3 cm, but some have been known to exceed 4 cm.

Posted by: Bix VT

So these "giant" hornets are 4cm?

Posted by: Gerbilo

i'm drunk and 7in

Posted by: Gerbilo

besurh hornets

Posted by: Gerbilo

HAHAHAHAHA WOW

yeah... good ole drunken post... interesting evening I had

Posted by: Bix VT

...Gerb. Dude sober up.

Posted by: Gerbilo

don't worry.. i'm sober now ...

Posted by: Bix VT

we're going off-topic...

How small do these mini bee cameras have to be? ...wouldn't they cost quite a bit due to miniaturization?

Posted by: armystud0911

Yes, they would be quite expensive, I can't quote any figures, I dunno if theres any out there folks like us. If you want to see one of them, they are pretty much the same as the ones they show in the Lord of the Rings special extended edition (there is a sequence where they show them filming Bilbo's face at his speech in the garden party).

You can expect to see prices that are prolly upward of 5k due to the fact that they must be extremely high quality. However, I have seen much lower quality cams that small for around $700 but those don't have as good of close-up or "macro" capibiblity.

Posted by: IceBreaker

One thing puzzles me though - some of these cameras follow the hornets over some great distances and some even manage to keep a fixed angle on them, regardless of the hornet's flight pattern...

...SO HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE IF THE CAMERAS CAN'T FLY? http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/perso/seb31.gif

Posted by: armystud0911

There are two ways they could do that, the first is, knock out a hornet, and strap a spy or microcam onto him, those can be as small as a pea. That is the only way that they could get a frame of referrence on him like in the beginning when they are just flying up to the hive. Another method is to make a fake hornet shell below the camera. If you notice, these shots prolly are shot in very poor quality so a microcam is an option.

Posted by: IceBreaker

Yet some cameras seem to be able to follow the hornets' flight patterns without (apparently) being strapped onto the insect (for ex. a front or side view, a non-fixed viewpoint, etc). How is that possible???

Posted by: armystud0911

I dunno, its got me stumped. The magic of Cinematography!
