I know this question has been asked before but here we go again:

This application has encountered a critical error:

FATAL ERROR!

Program: C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\war3.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 001B:0306A6A8

The instruction at '0x0306A6A8' referenced memory at '0x0306A6A8'.
The memory could not be 'read'.

This has happened during WC3 ROC campaigns, I have all the latest drivers for my GeForce FX5700 Ultra, DirectX 9.0b and all windows updates. What could be wrong? I read somewhere that lowering some of the options like sound acceleration would help but it hasn't worked.

I get TFT on Monday and I don't want the same experience, please help.

After adding -opengl to my WC3 ROC shortcut and disabling Vertical Sync on my graphics card I now get this message:

This application has encountered a critical error:

FATAL ERROR!

Program: C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\war3.exe
Exception: 0xC0000096 (PRIV_INSTRUCTION) AT 001B:6F5FCAD4

I haven't seen too many complaints about the dreaded c0000005 fatal error here at OTS.net, but people complain about it all the time on the Battle.net Open Tech Support forum. Sometimes it's very tricky to narrow down the cause of the error, as there are quite a few causes.

Have you always gotten these errors with RoC? If not, when did they start? If the problem didn't occur at one point, it's very important that you think about all of the hardware and software changes you've made since the problem started.

Are your video card/sound card/USB 2.0 card IRQs still being shared? If they are, it might be causing the game to crap out like it causes Starcraft to crap out. Get those IRQs unshared and then try again.

Can you please describe each and every single thing you've tried besides that, if anything? I need to know what you've tried.

Does this happen right when you start up a game or is it a little bit after?

Posted by: Ack1027

I've tried renaming the ' Movies ' folder in WC3 to 'blah' as some people said that would work. [ Yeah that desparate ] I've also tried rolling back to previous drivers for all my hardware parts. I installed RoC today and the very first time I ran it it had this problem. Usually occurs 15 min or so into the game.

So after I did all this I uninstalled the game, set optimized settings in my BIOS, and then reinstalled it.

It works ALOT better something like 35 min now but still it closes, this time there was no message, it just closed on it's own.

Thanks for the help

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Renaming the movies folder only works if the game is crashing before, during or right after the opening movie plays.

What were those "optimized" settings, exactly?

Did you take care of the IRQ problem before you played again?

Posted by: Ack1027

Mmm, I played it again this morning from 8:20-11:00 and it didn't crash at all. Though I'm not exactly sure what happened last time I think the problem may be fixed. Maybe I unconciously pressed Alt+F4 since there was no error message.

Unfortunately I can't reslove my IRQ sharing problem because 2 of my slots don't work and those are the two that have different IRQ assignments. So right now I have my USB 2.0 PCI Card and my GPU sharing one assignment and my sound on a separate IRQ.

The optimized settings is an option in my BIOS and it automatically sets it to whatever those may be. I'd have to find out those individual things one by one if I had to specifically tell you what they were.

Any way, for now the problem is fixed, thanks.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I was just curious about what those settings are because I feel that before one uses some global setting, they should know what individual settings are changed and what they mean. I wouldn't go into my BIOS and pick "optimized settings" if I had no idea what they were.

Posted by: Ack1027

Fatal error ocurred again. Seems like the intervals are at random. Nothing was changed since this morning when I played from 8:20-11:00.

Is there some list of preferred BIOS settings somewhere for WC3?

Is it because my generic ram isn't enough? [256mb]

I'll run memtest tonight.

Edit: I switched out my ram for a stick of DDR Kingston 512, not sure what kind of DDR though and the problem still occurred.

And for the IRQ issue: Should I buy a new mobo since the slots that don't work are the ones that I need to use in order to have different IRQ assignments?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

The "preferred BIOS settings" would be the ones that ensure optimal stability for your system, and of course those would be different for most systems. I would say that the "preferred" settings would basically be all the defaults. Usually when it comes to the c00000005 fatal error, the most important settings to pay attention to are your RAM timings, your FSB speed and the voltage you're feeding to your CPU. You definitely should have the default/auto values for all of those settings.

The RAM would only be a problem if the game cannot run stable with it. Definitely run memtest and see if you get any errors, and make sure that your RAM timings are at their defaults before you run the test.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you need a new motherboard, but if any device that you put into those PCI slots simply refuses to work, maybe the motherboard really is at fault. Have you ever gotten any devices to work in those slots before?

I don't remember if we brought this up in your IRQ thread or not, but do you have the option of assigning particular IRQs to particular slots in your BIOS?

Posted by: Ack1027

Thanks for the reply Negotiator.

I am completly frustated with my computer right now and about to chunk it out the window. Just a moment ago I was playing broodwar on battlenet and the IRQ error occured. The thing is, AFTER I was sick and tired of playing WC because it kept crashing, I took out the USB 2.0 PCI card that was thought to be the source of my IRQ sharing problem.

I thought, ' Hey, who cares if I don't get top speeds out of my broadband connection, it's not worth it, if it screws up my game '

When I took out the USB 2.0 PCI card I had to adjust my Soundcard around 3 times and finally I have it to where NOTHING is sharing IRQ with any other hardware.

So obviously if Starcraft crashed with the 0x00000005 BSoD error WITHOUT the USB 2.0 PCI card even in the system then it CAN'T be an IRQ problem, correct?

How do I check the voltage I'm feeding my CPU, and how to I check the FSB speeds? Will setting my BIOS settings to ' Fail-Safe Defaults ' do the trick?

Someone please help me before I go insane. X_x

Edit: Should I put my USB 2.0 PCI card back in again now that I know it's not an IRQ issue, EVEN if it still shares an IRQ assignment?

Edit 2: I set my BIOS settings to ' Fail Safe Defaults ' and then ' Hey I'll just watch some BW reps instead of playing bnet '

EVERY TIME I WATCH A REP IT CRASHES!!!!!!!

What escapes me is: HOW CAN SO MANY THINGS BE WRONG WITH WC AND SC AND MY COMPUTER AT THE SAME TIME!?!?!?!?

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

If your video card, sound card and USB 1.1 controller aren't sharing IRQs anymore and you're still getting the "IRQ not less or equal" BSoD, then no, I don't think it's an IRQ problem anymore, probably a driver problem.

Check the voltage you're feeding to your CPU and the FSB speed in your BIOS setup utility. If there are "auto" values for both of those settings, leave them at "auto".

No, please leave the USB 2.0 card out of the picture for now. As a matter of fact, it would be great if you wouldn't mind removing your sound card from the picture as well. When troubleshooting the c00000005 fatal error, it's useful to keep your hardware configuration as simple as possible.

What error do you get when you crash while watching a replay?

The answer to your last question is very simple - how stable your system is depends on your hardware choices, your operating system configuration and how well you maintain your OS. When it comes to games running properly, I'd say that your choice of hardware is most important.

Posted by: Ack1027

This is quite strange. My problems seem to have no logic to them whatsoever. I played BW for 3 hours or so last night online and played multiple games. We played about 3 games and watched 2 replays. Starcraft crashed once during a 1v1 early into the game maybe like 8 minutes, and the rest of the time it ran fine and didn't crash ever again after that.

Then today when I was playing WC3 again to test it out, I played about 2 missions through which is the longest I've gotten it to play so far and it crashed again.

Both times there were no error messages at all, they just closed out.

I have not adjusted anything to my hardware setup since taking out the USB 2.0 PCI Card.

If it really gets to the point where I MUST fix it I will take out the sound card but for now I just want to leave it in.

The only thing that I can think of that already hasn't been said is this.

My sound system is the Creative Inspire 5.1 5100 model. You won't find it on the American homepage for Creative because it was purchased in Korea. [ My mother went over there during winter break and bought the system because it is cheaper there. ]

The thing is, they use different voltages in Korea, and the sound system requires [ I'm not COMPLETELY sure of the numbers so I'll use made up ones so I can explain to you ] 50 watts to flow into it for proper power. But when I went to Radioshack they only had 40's and 200's. So instead of going overboard with 200's I decided to get 40's even though it skimped a little on power. It seems to sound okay and all the speakers work.

So my question is, maybe a power issue is the source of the problem?

Here is the EURO website with the specifications, can someone who please knows about electricity possibly explain my problem?

http://uk.europe.creative.com/produ...prod=336&page=6

The thing I bought at RadioShack was a Reverse Converter, and on it it says:

120VAC 60hz 44 watt input
240VAC 60hz 40 watt output.

Thanks.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Umm... your speakers have nothing to do with this problem, they're completely separate from your system.

However, power could be an issue, specifically your computer's power supply. If it's not feeding adequate power to all of your devices, the game will crash. If you can get your hands on a digital multimeter, test your voltages:

http://www.driverheaven.net/guides/testingPSU/

If you can't get your hands on one, you should still go into your BIOS setup utility and check your voltages there (most likely your motherboard has this feature). Even though the voltages won't represent your system under load (playing games), if you see one or more voltages that are way out of tolerance, that could be a problem.

If you really want to solve this problem, I highly recommend that you try playing with the most basic hardware configuration possible, including no sound card. If the problem stops, you will have narrowed down the problem greatly.

EDIT:

What were the results of running memtest?

Posted by: Ack1027

I ran memtest overnight and there were no errors after the insane amount of coverage it went through.

I don't think it's not enough power, I'm running a 350 Watt Antec power supply, 1 Cd-Rw drive, and one DvD drive, 2 hard drives, and that is all for peripherals.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I really wouldn't just say right away that the problem is not a power supply issue. If you get the chance and you've eliminated all other possible causes of the problem, test your PSU and see what results you get.

If you're not getting any specific error message anymore and either game just crashes to the desktop, my advice would be to simplify your hardware configuration as much as possible, do a clean boot, play either game and see if you still have a problem. Apparently you're not getting an error anymore that you can go on, so all I can suggest is that you try to narrow down things as much as possible. Good luck.

Posted by: Ack1027

Okay it crashed again so I've finally had it, the 0x000000D1 error came up for starcraft when I wasn't even playing on bnet, just chatting.

I've taken out the sound card leaving only the GPU, nothing else in ANY of my pci slots.

I really hope this can help narrow down what it is.

Here are some links about the 0x000000D1/DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...md_stp_ottj.asp
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6000/rh6045.htm
http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.../779/qid/308429

Was a particular driver file mentioned?

Posted by: Ack1027

Yes, Many files were mentioned, I will get them for you later in the day as I don't have time to find them now.

I read on the last link you gave me that I should look for unsigned drivers and I scanned for some and I've gotten 10. My question is, are these relevant and what should I do with these unsigned drivers?

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...oWebContent=1#2

That suggests I disable them one by one.

My current setup is Ram, and GPU only. The sound card and usb 2.0 PCI card are out.

If it means anything, I only played an hour or so of starcraft yesterday and it didn't crash.

Edit: Here is the other thread with almost the same problem and the complete BSoD. The file mentioned was TDI.SYS but the thing is, there is a new file everytime the BSoD comes up, I guess I'll do a better job of writing those down.

http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...?threadid=24352

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

What drivers are unsigned? Are they the same ones that are mentioned in the BSoDs you're getting?

Whatever they are, I'd suggest that you get updated versions that are signed or just remove them completely.

Posted by: Ack1027

The situation has turned for worst, please someone help me, I am desperate:

I was using internet explorer today as I was waiting for later when I would have time to play Starcraft and experiement to see if the BSoD would crash again, with the bare hardware setup that I have. While I was looking through this site, a BSoD comes up, I copy it down and after that EVERY TIME I reboot my computer, it loads all the way up to my desktop and it loads. It loads for about 8 minutes and then it a DIFFERENT BSoD comes up. This happened 5 times consecutively.

This is when I decided, I've had enough, I will do a repair installation of Windows. So I pop in my Windows XP Home cd and change my boot order so it boots up from the cd. The setup loads up and I press the ' R ' button to repair my system.

It takes me to the repair console which is nothing really but command prompt. This is where I proceed to do Chkdsk. I reboot my computer changing back my boot order to the original and again the same error occurs, Loads up to desktop for 8 minutes and then freezes + BSoD.

Then I decide it's just time for a complete reinstallation of Windows. I change the boot order in my BIOS back to the cd so it can load up. Windows setup loads up and I press ' Enter ' for fresh installation. The next screen shows up and it says this:

' This will completely install a fresh version of Windows XP home on your system. '

' Press R if your system files are corrupt and you wish to repair your system '

Naturally, I press R, because I think there is still a chance for it to repair.

What happens next is that it automatically takes me to the fresh installation screen for Windows XP Home. It continues to fresh install as I'm sitting there in disbelief. It then asks for a product key. I've lost my original box when I moved from my last house so I couldn't enter it.

Now I've gone into the first repair option [ Command prompt type one ] and I've tried EVERYTHING that is possible as to deter my system from entering the fresh install screen.

No matter what I do ' Last known good configuration ', ' Safe Mode ' it ALWAYS enters the FRESH new windows XP home setup. I'm typing this from my friends computer and online I've found a program that helps find out your Windows XP Home cd key, problem is I can't even run it.

Then I thought, hey using a floppy as a boot floppy I can deter everything and run what is on it. I planned to put this program on the floppy. THEN I realized that no one that I know uses floppies anymore nor does my Floppy drive work anymore.

I don't want to buy another copy of Windows XP Home just for a product key when I can get the one I have just by running one program. Also the most important question is have I lost everything? I talked to my cousin who graduated from Georgia Tech University last Saturday majoring in Computer Engineering and he says yes, I have lost everything.

This is the most horrible computer nightmare experience I've had in my life, someone PLEASE help me!!!!!

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Umm... I think you're gonna have to contact Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...doffer33a&sd=GN

My Googling did not yield any ways to get the key if you can't get into Windows.

A repair installation won't make you lose everything, but a format + reinstall of Windows will.

BTW, just because you have a cousin who graduated with a CE degree doesn't mean that he knows anything about troubleshooting PCs.

Posted by: Ack1027

The one time you couldn't give me advice, I figured it out myself, many thanks Negotiator but I think you may have to help me one last time.

I've basically fixed everything on my own [ 90% sure ] except for ONE issue. Windows loads up, to the black screen with the windows logo and the green loading bar and this shows up

lsass.exe - System Error

An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.

As you read this I will be googling and searching for a way to fix this myself, so please take your time if you have something else to do, I respect what you have done for all of us at OTS and I know you deserve your rest time ^^

This is all I need to solve and I'm pretty sure [ again 90% ] that my computer problems will be solved.

Btw, this is off-topic but I failed to mention that my cousin helped me build this computer and has built computers for a living during his early college years and is also the owner of an internet cafe. Though he's never been a tech anywhere he's always helped me in the past with PC problems and I rely on him over somebody on the other end of a phone anyday.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Umm... I did give you some advice, and that was "contact Microsoft". Advice is advice whether you realize it or not, mmkay?

How did you solve that problem?

My Googling indicates that you may need to format, I hope you're ready to do that incase it's necessary...

I am only 30% sure that your computer problems will be solved. I wouldn't be surprised if you still get those errors in Starcraft and Warcraft III.

Posted by: Ack1027

Wow yay, more problems!

Here's the new one I came across after trying to fix the Lsass.exe problem. Basically I can't log into my recovery console anymore because the password is unknown to me. An hour ago I just left it blank and pressed enter but now it's a different password? -_-vv

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...2&Product=winxp

I am thinking about calling/emailing Microsoft, but I'm not so sure about what they mean when they say 2 incidents for free. Is it really free the first two times?

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...doffer33a&sd=GN

Look at #3 in the first link, I think that is the hotfix I need, will Microsoft charge me if I just call/email them to send that to me?

Thanks so much for your time.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

I interpreted the incident statement to mean that your first two "incidents" are free, yes...

As for your other question, did you read this?:

"Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question."

If it's determined that you just need that file to solve your problem, you won't be charged unless you have other problems that you will be charged for if you seek Microsoft's help.

Posted by: Ack1027

Update:

Well I decided to do a parallel installation of Windows XP and just back up my data onto another hard drive and put it on the new installation.

But who am I right? I got another problem.

When installing the fresh copy of windows it won't take product keys. I called Microsoft and they've made two of them fresh for me and I've typed them in exactly and they don't work. Right now I'm waiting on a call from their resource team to see what they can do for me. Strange, I can't get ANY product keys to work >=\

Thanks for all that help negotiator.
