FFXI requirements

I've had FFXI for awhile now, and it runs okay, but it gets really laggey sometimes. I know I have a bad computer, and I need to upgrade, but I was wonering if anyone have any recomendations as what to buy. I just want to buy a processor and ram. I currently have 256 SD ram, but my computer can support DDR also. I have a 900 MHz processor. I know I can buy some really good stuff, but I only have about a $200 budget. Please help.

FFXI is more dependant on the CPU than GPU. While even with the fastest CPU available right now you will have pretty good performance, big battles and cities with lots of people will still have low framerates.
You really cant do an upgrade from what you have now with $200. The CPU and Motherboard alone would cost that much.

I don't want to buy a whole new comp. I just want a new processor and more ram. I don't need a motherboard or video card.

If your current CPU is 900mhz, theres no way it will support any of the cpu's out now. So you would have to get a new motherboard. What video do you have now? If its below a GeForce4 Ti 4200, you would need to upgrade that as well. FFXI cpu limited goes at about a GeForceFX 5600 Ultra.

I just got a new motherboard not too long ago. I know it will support a decent processor because I had my friends 2 GHz before. My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX with AGP8X.

You will need to upgrade your video as well. MX is basically the lowest thing you can buy(next to intel integrated).

It would depend on your mobo. List the brand and the model #. I would get at least 512mb of ram though. 1gb would be ideal.
For the video card, if you wait a few weeks for the new generation of cards to come out, the older ones will drop in price. I would look at getting a GeForceFX 5700 Ultra. Anything higher than that wont help you with FFXI, but other games it will. Its up to you on how much you want to spend.
