Hi all, ok i just dont get this. I no longer have the Sasser virus. I have dowloaded the patch from Microsoft's website and i have run Norton and AVG. There are all indications that the virus is gone since my PC does not shut downa any more. The problem now is that i get an error message every 1 hour or so telling me i still have the virus. What can i od to end this?

your pc not shutting down doesnt mean its gone. it is a limited virus, whatever it was going to do, which is simply reboot your computer a cetain number of times, it did.
to help you with the error, we need to know whats generating it. Norton? some other program?

I should have said that. The error is generated by AVG and no matter how many times i scan with the damn thing i still end up getting the message.

Ive got 2 people who used the Symantec sasser cleaning tool that still have it also. There isnt another varriant out already, is there?

Seeing as they arrsted the dude who created it in the first place, there may not be another variant. One of my friends gave me alist of processes i should close in Task Manager. He says that the processes are what the Sasser uses to hide itself. I will go thru Task Manager and see if they are there.

Varriants of viruses/worms arent always created by the same people who created the original.
How do they trace something like a worm to the creator? Unless they like signed their name, they could just dump it on a forum or p2p network and it would take off on its own.

What you said happened to me before, the notices constantly popping up [ Remember Redwench? ] with AVG
I just did a clean reinstall and then there are no more of those notices.
Hope that helped.

Reinstall of what? AVG? If so i will do that right away!
SKYNH- i wasnt the one who said the dude was caught, i am just reporting what i saw in the news. Who knows if its true or not?

Normally reinstall = install the operation system.
Virus can destroy files/folders that reinsatlling Windows will not cure, one have to format the hard driver and start vevrything from fresh.
Personally I do not belive that the police got the right person, those who write virus/worms and trojans are not amateurs, they are profecional and nerds that just didn't get the recognition, the simple bugs are writen using Visual Basic, Java and even with C++, no 18 years old has the knowhow. Usually the ones that are arrested are the ones who wants other to think that they (writers of virus) so good. NO WAY!
Virus writers are evil people to from the start.
Best cure to stay away from attacs is to stay away from Internet and keep installing OS from fresh every time one gets serious problems, I recommend two OS and use the OS on D partition to be used as the OS connected to the Internet, at least that way vital data can be retrived before spending few hours installing second OS again.

yes, do a un&reinstall of avg first. run a reg cleaner between. more than likely, that will take care of the problem, as the virus is gone.

If you're using XP or ME, make sure to disable System Restore before you run your virus scan.
Also, just just follow microsoft's advice (enable the firewall, update the system, use the removal tool, etc) and you won't have Sasser.

I just unisntalled AVG, cleaned out the registry, enabled my firewall (didnt even knwo it wasnt on!!) and scanned with Norton. End result...absolutely no error message. I am still sceptical but thanks a lot for the help. It seems my problem is gone :

I had AVG and it does not clean it. You have to uninstall AVG and get rid of Nortons because it does nothing. So far the new Mcafee is doing the job. Make sure you also have that firewall up too.....Every little bit helps......:-)

See, I told you reinstalling AVG would do the trick ^^. I got bombarded with about 34938742 messages after I got back from school one day X_x

If the thing catch you in middle of some important work, just open 'Command prompt' -> Start/Programs/Accessories
Type in 'Shutdown -a'. The countdown will stop, but it can return
Firewall is best protection, at least for me...
