I'm posting this for my brother, he has a sony vaio notebook or laptop or whatever they call those stupid things these days. Anyway, he has been running into a few problems with his DVD/CD-RW drive. One night his wife was watching a movie and when they were done they tried closing realplayer but received the program not responding message, so he waited for it save but it still didn't close, so he clicked "end now". He had to reboot after that and his computer has workd fine except that that DVD is no longer recognized by the computer anymore. I have reinstalled the drivers, tried several other playback devices, repaired windows, run adaware and all the antivirus stuff but I know its not related with that, but I still can't even get "my computer" to even recognize that there is even a DVD in there. It has now happened to 3 DVDs total and it is really annoying. The DVDs still work on any other computer too, just not his. He is somewhat computer illiterate so reformatting is kinda a non-option with him cuz he wouldn't know how to backup his data and all that stuff let alone reinstalling it. I could do it for him in several months if I must though.

its a registry error more than likely, if its recognized in the bios. if its not recognized by the bios, its a hardware issue. remove the drivers for it, power down, disconnect the drive. reboot and run a registry cleaner and scandisk. then turn off, reconnect it and reboot. the exact registry change needed is floating around the web and this site if its stubborn.
