I remember seeing a show on the discovery channel about military lasers. They had this humv outfitted with some prototype laser, that thing blew up tanks in about 3 seconds. That was like 2 years ago, why arent they using that thing now, it had some power.

Probably they were just testing it out. WHo know, maybe its not safe to use, like it may overheat after a certain amount of time or after a certain amount of usage. What interests me is how much more bllodier warfare is going to be. Cna u imagine the possibilities if we had laser weappons?

Ya know, if they switch to lasers, war is gonna suck. There won't be any Rambo-ish guys with cool guns and grenades strapped to him, because he can just have a laser. No more cool shoot-out scenes and bullet cases everywhere. Just lame sci-fi noises.
I'm not saying that war is cool or anything, but it makes stuff like Rambo and other action movies not...cool..

Well, anything to protect our homeland is good, don't worry too much about people carrying them around though, that's a long way off, they are enormous and require a TON of power, chemicals and gases, and did I mention expensive?! $56 mil wlll buy you a LOT of other stuff.

If that was directed at me, then yes, I have seen them. I just think it's cooler to listen to the bullets fly out with different noises, hear the shell cases, reload the gun, and just look cool.
Ever seen the Matrix movies? Imagine it with lasers...just wouldn't be the same.
But hey, you're entitled to your opinions. Lasers have their advantages, but guns are just plain cool!

Light may be an abundant source of energy, but for a laser, you have to create light. And in order to do that you need a lot of energy from another source. We may have laser guns like in movies, but not like Star Wars...a laser is a steady stream of light, not a bolt.
Star Trek was closer to the mark with the Phaser...steady stream, although they call it a "Particle beam" not a beam of light.

The great thing about light is that it can be focused pretty well with out nearly as much resistance as other forms of energy. Try focusing a potential kinetic or even atomic energy like that and watch what ever you use to restrict be destroyed. If we want to use light in a destructive manner it doesn’t require large sums of energy because what is more important then the energy input is how finely focused that light is, making it an very likely weapon for the future.
Now do I think we will have tractor beams, and phasers? No. Do I think that we will have light based weapons? yes.

We've been doing work with lasers for a LONG time. Can light be used as a destructive force? Yeah, we know this. Our sun does it very easily with UV rays. Which lasers are used in many different "Destructive" ways. We already have the technology to use lasers to cut through metals, but focusing it for more than a few feet makes it a bit difficult. Take it like this. IF you're an inch off at 10 feet away, how far off would you be 20 miles away? The spread of light is simple geometry. But getting it refined to some levels are just not very easily done to make things totally effective at high ranges. Do I think we'll have "laser guns"? Yeah, sure, sometime we will. Do I ever think we'll hit "warp speed Mr. Scottie?" I don't know. Theory is theory, and fact is fact. Just because a theory proves or disproves something, doesn't mean it's logically true. I remember a few years ago some guy using a theory to prove our entire mathematical system was wrong by proving 1 + 1 =/= 2. I don't remember the theory in full or anything, but it just goes to show you, theory isn't always true logically, or not.
Many theories go for "light speed" and "time travel". Do I believe that there would be some hyper space time continium at light speed? Personally, I don't, but there's theory that says it does. Until we actually get up to that point, all we have is theories and ideas.
(Personally, I don't believe light speed will do much for us, since the nearest star from us is over 4 light years away (so they say). That's 4 years of going at the speed of light. It might be worth the trip, but that's one helluva waste of energy!
I also like those kickass laser shows at some museums, those rock!

i liked that post AoD. In any case, i dont remember much of my high school physics but doesnt light travel in a straight line? If so, does it dissipate the farhter away it gets from its source?

Well, light does travel in a straight line. But you must remember, the "laser" must be amplified. Some of your standard "lasers" are amplified by a crystal. And precisely cutting a crystal to absolute perfection is as hard as drawing a circle. So, getting it perfect can create a bit of a hassle, specially when your talking millionths of a micrometer, or less. I give them credit for making them so well as they have as of now.

Flanders: Light sabers are possible...read "The Physics of Star Wars". It's been a while, but I *think* that they don't use lasers...I'm pretty sure, like the "phaser" that it's a particle weapon. But the reason I say laser weapons take a lot of energy is I was thinking on a large scale...not a small 1mm laser beam to shoot right through someone's head, but more like a 3 foot beam to shoot at large vehicles...
