year of the cicadas!

They are due to arrive any day now if you don't know what yet, try this link
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/...cadas.html#main
I live in southern Ohio and my grandparents tell me of the great wonders and terrors of years past. Trees stripped raw of anything green, roads covered with 1-1/2 inch insects, finding them in your house, on your windows ect. ect. ect. I am kind of excited to see them here as I never have seen the swarms before, I think that they are very queer creatures. I often will find on laying upside down on a sidewalk, and assuming its dead, nudge it off with my foot only to have my heart stopped by an inferno of racket from the enraged cicada spinning like a top on the ground till it finally figures out which way is up, (talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed!) I hope we get nailed good this year!

17 Year Cicadas? Not time for them here yet.... I think I was 6-8 last time they were here. so... 89-91ish
Posted by: Bix VT
It's the year for me...here in VA I hear they're pretty bad...not looking forward to it at all.
Posted by: Blackknight
I'm ready for 'em here in Ohio. It'll be interesting....and loud.
Posted by: redwench
i love them. when i lived in the city, we had them every year. obviously not the main brood on the 17 year cycle. havent had any to speak of here in about 7 years, so im hoping at least one brood will be active this year.
Posted by: Bix VT
...you love them? Why on earth?
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Everyone head down to my house, grab a rifle (there are plenty), grab some ammo, and let's do some skeet shooting, cicada-style.. It'll be Fun!!

Some people (like me) think that this is a fascinating natural phenominon.
Also Gerbilo, I think you may have been hit with the 13 year brood, I may be wrong but I am certain that there is a lesser brood that emerges every 13 years, that may what your thinking of.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
...fascinating natural phoenomenon? (sp? that can't be right...) Or...annoying swarm of suicidal insects COVERING EVERYTHING...
I still like the skeet-shooting idea.
Posted by: Bix VT
I agree that they are a fascinating natural phoenomenon, but that doesn't mean I have to like them...honestly I don't mind them it's the fact that they die and are everywhere, not to mention the birds eat them like crazy and I have a black car...
Posted by: RAcastClarke
>_<
That's all I have to day. Black car + full birds= >_<
Grab a squeegee.
Posted by: armystud0911
Well it may be fun to shoot them, its not like kinning a couple thousand will put a dent in the population (just a side note did you know that insects over double the rest of the creatures on the earth including fish BY WEIGHT!) however, scientists say that there are many good effects that come from brood X, they airate soil, and provide numerous predators with an unlimited supply of food. If your really getting to this stuff, there are cicada festavals at which everything you can imagine happens, though they are primarily there to show off how good they can cook them. No you don't have to like them, but that's why some of us do.
Posted by: Bix VT
Eww...eating them? Wouldn't they taste kind of like grasshoppers?
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Oh that's so..interest...cooking them..umm.. Hey look!!
<points to something away from him and takes off>
Posted by: armystud0911
Well I can't say I've tried them, but a LOT of people get into it, they don't do it raw usually but if prepared properly can taste rather good. Yes I imagine they prolly do taste like grasshoppers, I have haven't had either but I have made sure to acquaint myself with ants, grubs and turantulas though, and I haven't vomited yet.
Posted by: Bix VT
*shudders* I dunno, I'd fel real weird about eating anything with more than 4 legs...
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Hey look! More stuff!
<continues to point>
Never had insects...maybe they are good..
Go on Fear Factor! Make mucho dinero..share it with the community! (Me= community)

lol
Posted by: Gerbilo
I'm pretty sure they were the 17 year ones here
I barely remember it... crazy shit though
Posted by: redwench
theres a few different cycles, the 17 year is just largest brood.
i love them because i love the noise they make. very soothing.
Posted by: armystud0911
Agreed red, and many people call it "Infernal racket!"
Just a side note: all cicadas are 17 or 13 year broods but the one coming is Brood X or THE BIG ONE! at least that is what I have gathered from various sites
Posted by: Bix VT
Ah, the noise...I see. Lol, when I think of cicadas I think of how they all die and are lying everywhere...and of course the bird crap on my car
I don't have a problem with the sound myself, so I can understand your point of veiw.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
I honestly have never dealt with cicadas, nor do I plan to anytime soon. I still like the ideas of shooting them, not eating them, and winning money and sharing it with me.
Mm..money..
Maybe I'll grab a steamroller and make some cicada pancakes..ugh...
What'll I use for the syrup? DON'T ANSWER THAT!

Bah. That's one thing that I don't miss about the midwest--all that damned racket.
Soothing my eye.
Posted by: Gerbilo
Nothing here yet...
Posted by: redwench
it is soothing if you grew up with it every summer. i like the crickets and frogs too. its chainsaws and 18 wheelers i can do without.

Its one of the many things I like about when we go out camping in Iowa... Clear night skies and you hear the frogs and crickets so clearly as well
Posted by: RAcastClarke
I live in nowhere-land, so I love crickets and frogs and chirpies and other stuff too.
Bix, if you feel free to go witht he syrup thing, do it. I'd like to hear it, as long as it obeys basic OTS standards.
Hah, interesting.

Now that is some quality entertainment!

Isn't it awesome?? What a high quality site.

The Cicadas haven't come here yet (Western NJ) ... even though according to some potency map, I'm right in the middle of it
My dad got hit with them HARD in Washington D.C. about two weeks ago and I have not seen not heard a Cicada
I really wanted ot check them out and see how my school body reacts to them

I think you'll be okay here...they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that...
Ever see Tommy Boy??
Posted by: Bix VT
I'm sorry but...do you guys eat bugs on a regular basis? If not then I really see no reason to eat them now...
Sick little bugs. Eating them would be like licking my windshield and trust me, that would be gross.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Delicious...
Ever see Tomorrow Never Dies?
Posted by: Gerbilo
I haven't seen/heard any cicadas here.. i guess we aren't in the area ofr them though
Posted by: IceBreaker
insects are full of proteins - the Chinese know that, and strangely they are healthier than the average westerner...
...but no thanks, no bugs for me http://www.fintoys.net/yabb/yabbima...lies/snobby.gif
Posted by: Bix VT
Just because they know it, that doesn't mean they eat a lot of them...the reason they are so healthy is because they have FAR fewer burger joints over there...
Posted by: redwench
steamed rice and vegetables vs. big mac and fries
nothing to do with bugs.
Posted by: Bix VT
exactly. see? red gets it...
see?
Posted by: IceBreaker
Yes I know, arguing with her is risky http://forum.hardware.fr/images/perso/caiman54.gif
...but fun
Redwench> not ALL westerners are fond of fast food...
Posted by: redwench
we werent talking about all, merely the statistical average. unless youre alleging that NO chinese people are unhealthy, which would be patently ludicrous.
Posted by: IceBreaker
Fast food is far from being the main constituent of the "average" westerner's diet..
Posted by: redwench
no, but its a pretty damn large part of it for many people.
Posted by: armystud0911
hey guys sorry to interrupt your hijacked convo but THEY'RE HERE! We have seen a few over the past few weeks but last weekend they were all over the place! I would just walk by a tree and a huge buzzing inferno would fly out, all over me. I can't walk 10 steps without almost smashing a few. It's cool, I like the way they look. The ones here are a sort of dark, yet bright blue with red eyes and yellow transparent wings. Oh yeah they taste ok too, my only recommendation though is to eat the head first, a friend popped a live one in his mouth and it was buzzing in there quite unpleasantly till he crunched it.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Dude..ugh..
Congrats. You win.
Posted by: armystud0911
did you change your "crunchy" title after you read my post?
Posted by: SKYHN
Homeland Security has issued a warning to be on the lookout for members of Al Cicada.

lol, must be cuz I haven't slept in days but that seems really funny now, course, a lot of stuff seems funny at the moment.

Yeah, dude. Don't joke about that. A lot of innocent people died that day.
And, no, I changed my title to reflect my PSO character class. Good observation though, hah, didn't think of that.
Posted by: IceBreaker
My post was aimed at BUSH damnit...
Is the cicada "invasion" over yet? I've heard that only the eastern side of the US is affected by it..
Posted by: Bix VT
It's mostly over here in VA, the noise has stopped and I'm only hitting about 10 per day with my windshield now...and there are bodies everywhere.
Posted by: TheeMon
none in ohio so far
Posted by: armystud0911
Some counties get them, some don't but beleive me Ohio sure has gotten its share! My grandparents live in Mason and they will get hit by another brood in a few years.
Posted by: TheeMon
yeah but none this year, well here atleast
Posted by: armystud0911
yeah, we have enuf to spare in cincy, we could send you a shipment
Posted by: Bix VT
You want all the bodies around my front porch and around my car? All yours bud...
Posted by: RAcastClarke
I'll take some, bud. Never seem 'em, but I've heard 'em. BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Posted by: Bix VT
Ok give me your address and pay the shipping and they're all yours. Nasty little bugs.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Hm...
123 Anytown, USA.
Look for the house with the windows, and possibly a lawn.
I'll be there, either shooting stuff or playing video games.
Posted by: armystud0911
sorry man, no lawn
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Pfft. Must be covered in cockrocahes, though I don't have any, myself.
Dirty little buggers.
edit: What? What did I just say? God, I contradicted myself..I can be so stupid sometimes... _-_
Posted by: redwench
finding your pants may help.
Posted by: armystud0911
sorry bud, no roaches either, or cicadas before you ask
Posted by: Gerbilo
we neeed not pants!!!
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Hah, thanks for noticing the change. Makes me feel loved.
My pants are indeed missing. I'm wearing shorts at the moment...where did they go??
Posted by: Gerbilo
What's almost as good is when you have a week/weekend of heavy drinking and you wake up sunday morning and can't figure out how the hell pants work anymore
Posted by: Oldcrocd
Man when I was a student (many, many years ago) I remeber being nearly caught in female dorm and trying to shin the drainpipe with both legs in one leg of the pants - tough man tough! Bit of a hurry leaving you see. Ended up taking them off and carrying them from where I landed
Posted by: Bix VT

That takes skill!

Lucky...just like the Fonz, eh?
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Eyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..... or is it eeeeeeeeeeeeeey...??
Discuss.
Posted by: Bix VT
Discuss?
Hmm...I wonder what Da Fonz would say about the 17 year brood...
Posted by: Gerbilo
EEEEEAAAYYYYYYYy they are getting splattered all over my bike!
Posted by: armystud0911
They are all over the place now, if I look at just about any given tree, the trunk is nearly covered in cicadas. Also, whenever I look up, I can see hundreds of them flying around. When I walked into my dorm, the girl at the desk calmly informed me that I was wearing three of them. Oh yeah, lets not mention that the ground is COVERED with their carcasses.
Posted by: IceBreaker
How poetic...
Posted by: Bix VT
So, does everyone still like them?
Posted by: redwench
yup
Posted by: RAcastClarke
Are they in any danger population-wise as a result of these massive swamrs getting demolished like they are?? I'm just curious.
Posted by: redwench
the broods? yes, they are supposedly getting close to the minimal sustaining population. but there are annual cicadas almost everywhere, those arent affected.
Posted by: RAcastClarke
uh-oh..
i'm sure they'll be okay. i think you got me typing like you now, red. hmm..
well, i never see the cicadas anyway, so if they die off (which i doubt they will) i won't really know. we'll see what happens
Posted by: Bix VT
Well, now that it's mostly gone, I hope they survive. I want my kids to experience them some day...maybe I'll let my kids stay here and then take a vacation to CA or something...
Posted by: armystud0911
speaking of the population decrease, I saw a picture from our old 1963 world book and there was a car in virginia that was completely covered in cicadas. They were so plentiful that entire populations of younger trees were utterly wiped out because of the females laying their eggs in young tree branches. I don't think that the cicada populations outiside of urban areas are in danger though.

That would make an interesting anti-theft protection hehe...a would-be thief approaching the car would have an angry swarm of bugs flying into his face..
...the snag is, the car owner would have the same problem

I suppose so - remembering millions of bugs' names - possible with a 512MB PC3200 RAM implant http://www.fintoys.net/yabb/yabbimages/smilies/grin.gif
Posted by: Fury451
use them cicadas as a bug-shield ? yeah not a bad idea but id use bees or better , wasps instead
Posted by: IceBreaker
Come to think of it, this "protection" has one other flaw - all the thief will need is a can of Baygon and lo! no more bugs Unless there is a way of creating a new strain of highly adaptive bugs, so as to make them as resistant as cockroaches for instance..

Drop the idea. It's not gonna happen, bud.
