Windows Me looks retarded
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Last night I had a chance to work with Windows Me for the first time while I was troubleshooting a PC. The first thing I see is the dumb load up screen that looks like a kid drew it with a crayon.
Besides the dumb look, the added features are about worthless and resource comsuming.
On the bright side, it at least ran stable. At least after I found out they were running their 256 MB DIMM in slot 3 with slot 1 and 2 empty. Maybe some boards can do that but not this one.
If Windows XP is anything like Me, I'll recommend anyone to get Windows 2000 instead.

I have ME
and yes, that logo is about as pretty as an ape's ass.

You can change the Startup screen if you don't like it. I will direct quote Maximum PC July 2000, Vol 6, No 7. Page 56, author Logan Decker. I think he can say it much better then I could.
"Let's start by getting rid of the tired (and, to some, offensive) Windows startup screen. Choose an image that appeals to your peculiar tastes, and open it in Paint (which should be hiding in your Accessories menu). Then go to Image>Attributes and type "640" in the width box and "400" in the height box. The file can't be any larger than this, so you'll have to crop, expand, or otherwise massage your image to the correct dimensions. When you're satisfied with the results, go back to Image>Attributes and change the width to 320, which will result in a squashed-looking picture. Fear not: Windows will stretch it back to 640 when the image loads. Select File>Save, and (this is crucial) select "256-color bitmap" from the "Save As Type" file listing. Finally, name your document "logo.sys" and save it in your PC's root directory. The new logo should now appear every time you start up.
Now let's move on to the other two screens. The "Please wait..." and "You are now ready to shut down..." screens, named "logow.sys" and "logos.sys," respectively, should be located in the Windows directory. If you can't find them, don't sweat it. You can still create your own. Back up the original logo files if they exist, and follow the same procedures as above, naming your new files "logow.sys" and "logos.sys" and dropping them in your Windows directory (not the root directory).
Ambitious interior decorators can impress their friends by heading over to www.nucleus.com/~kmcmurdo/win95logo.html for instructions on creating an animated startup screen.
Some caveats: WinME doesn't have the shutdown logos, and Windows 2000 dropped the startup and shutdown logos altogether."
I love OmniPage Pro 10.

so by looking at chako's avatar using the suggested method ak described previously, I can see the WinME startupscreen?

I've got an evil jack-in-the-box with the words "turning the crank" at the top.
although someone mispelt it, they have a K instead of a C for crank.
idiots.

I think it refers to the good kind of Krank... is that how you spell it?
ak(on krank)

yeah, I can see that sort of, but it doesn't make any sense, you turn the crank of a jack in the box right? that's what's depicted.
don't ask me, stupidity in itself.

hmmm i find the features of ME useful and i love the quick boot time. and no im not going to strip down win98 to get that same boot time. when im running ME at home i have 98% free resources and i have not modified the OS to not boot certain things. on my Dell laptop here at work and when i had win2k at home on my puter for a short time i cold never get it above 90% resources free. that doesnt meet my definition of bloated. i tried running diablo UO and a few of my sims under win2k and it just couldnt cut it. i would highly recomend that if ur primarily a gamer not to use win2k on ur gaming machine.

I liked the site about changing the pictures, now I have a few to use on new comp. WinME...Never buy anything from Billy with ME in the name, I heard it was bugged to hell and doesn't have DOS, there goes 85% of my games right there.
Posted by: JANNA
it has dos same as all the other win9x OS u still have to use a boot disk to get dos games to run right since most run in protected mode and none of the win9x OS work well with dos protected mode software. but im for anything that ends DOS all together... well almost anything im not for XP

Here's what I think of WinME:

Im sorta with JANNA
Ive never had a problem with ME. I just hear how awfull it is and that somehow gets to me and I start bashing it. I dunno.
Oh- and I dont know about any "Quick Boot Times". Mine takes half a day to start up or restart. And no, I dont have alot of programs and stuff on it- barely any. my 133 with win 98 boots up in about half the time the comp with ME takes.
