Shipping a pet overseas... need some advice...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, I dunno if you guys can help me with this, but I'll ask it here anyway:

Let's say I have a pet dog in the Philippines, and I really love this animal to death. So I wanted to bring him here in California. But I haven't done this before and I dunno how hard it's gonna be to bring an animal into US shores...

How hard is this? What procedures so I need to do if this is even possible? And how much would the potential costs be? Is the animal gonna be safe during transit? Where do people keep the animal?

I know there have been blind people who travel overseas with seeing-eye dogs, so I guess this could be possible.

Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated

fortunately, we are not england 6 month quarantine.

first, check with your vet to find out vaccinations required, etc. (a us vet that is). by all means, ask his/her advice on this matter too.

are you just shipping pet or someone coming with? airline or boat?

and test animal for diseases first. heartworm comes to mind.
if animal is old and/or ill, leave it in the phillipines. it may not survive the trip.

but get a nice big airline approved carrier for animal. you will have to provide food and water for it on trip. if by plane, some carriers wont take animals. so check and make sure cargo area is pressurized and heated/cooled. i would wait til winter in phillipines, so animal doesnt bake on tarmac if theres a problem.

it will be expensive. no way around that. plan on the cost of a human ticket, and be pleasantly surprised

if its been several years, you may not want to disrupt its life.

anyway, as long as theyve had the proper vaccinations and some time to take effect thereafter, i dont think the us has a quarantine policy. but check with a local vet, or call the local humane society. they can refer you to the proper people if they cant answer your questions.

Did it almost 3 years ago. A household pet (a cat) requires all standard shots before transport. I believe rabies is the required innoculation. It isn't any big deal and there isn't a quarantine. Especially, if it comes along for the ride with a family member.

My family carried it on the plane with them and held it in the seat. The poor thing was sick as hell because the family was afraid to feed or water him for 15 hours.

It never hurts to call or email the airline. They get these questions all the time.

Here Laggy, I give you this link not to worry you about what could go wrong (although I am sure the airlines are more then adequate to lose whatever you ship by them), but for the info found at the end of the horror story.

hah dude i reccomend not to. unfortunately therte really is no other way accept boat and driving hehe. i have to fly alot of animals seeing is how i am an animal rehaber. i fly animals about average 5 times a month hehe. and 3 out of 5 get sent to the wrong damn place hehe. they keep them with the rest of th luggage and if u have dumbass retarded people working the luggage it goes bad hehe. like i have sent some rare unique animals and some of those people have never seen an animal like that (the luggage people i mean) and they have to *** with it and touch it and try to feed it. i had a case of a guy having to take a red tail hawk out or the carrier i had it in and it grabbed him with its feet(we call that being footed hehe) and they have about 300 pounds crushing power in there feet. it almost got a couple of his fingers and ***ed his arm up real good he needed a hospital but it was his fault =) he learned his lesson. that was bad though and i had another bird sent across the country when it was suppose to come to calif. from arizona hehe.
