I have windows XP and while it's scanning it seems to freeze on compress old files. Why won't the scan work?

If the files are very old or somehow linked to a program that has been removed then running registry cleaner to remove missing link search by windows should help, i.e windows has the tendency to freeze when it cn not find required info from its registry.
Have you run defrag, i.e the system might be having difficulty in locating the data.
Compressed and zipped files should be opened first.
So many things can go wrong.
Always make lots of backups onto CDs, and keep the CDs in dry, clean and in room temperature, hot temperature will distroy the data on CD.
