There is a free local port scanner available via:http://www.webattack.com/download/dllps.shtml

PC should have at least 3 ports open for Internet and e-mail traffic.
There is a change that you have firewall that is doing the blocking.

Microsoft has also FAQ/support knowledge database for problems when updating Operation System. Some times there is a needed for more files to be updated than only one. SP1 is thought to correct several problems 'holes' in the MS XP, but...

Also visit the motherboard manufacturer's homepage (FAQ), you might need updating your motherboard drivers too.
BIOS flashing only upgrades BIOS.

Run Windows registry cleaner utility program (I reccomend Norton System Works 2004, WinDoc, launch from the CD, because user can not destroy the registry with it). When updating or upgrading anything on a PC one should make sure that the 'platform' is clean and runs without problems, if e problem is left unfixed the problem will cause more destruction after a updating process.
