Internet Warning Message

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, normally I don't give a crap what what warning messages pop up on my computer while I'm browsing but THIS one got my attention it said something to the effect of:
Attention UC student: Your IP address is on file with the UC central server, it is now open to investigation for anyone to see (i.e. FBI, hackers ect.) if you do NOT want your personal information to be compromised please run this software now: link to Clean Space 8 program

Then it had all this legal mumbo jumbo with my IP address and yada yada yada, it never stated that I commited any offense, just that my personal information could be compromised. What on earth does this mean? I run Norton Firewall and stuff but this looks a little freaky, what should I do? I'm sick of getting new software.

Are you a UC student?

If so, this could just be an annoying pop-up message that the company making the software is using to scare people into using their products. Could also be some nerdy hacker on your (college/school? network, if it exists) goofing around.

I don't think it is anything to worry about. Just make sure to keep updating your virus software and firewall stuff, if you are that nervous.

Don't sweat it.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to read your profile..it answers that first question obviously.

I'll post a comment for ya.

Could you please PM me the URL of the site where you got that pop-up?

ignore it. the popup grabbed your ip, did a reverse dns and spewed out that crap. of course UC has your IP on file and your info is obtainable by hackers and the fbi (as is required by law), but not by some random fruitcake. and no hacker wants your information, unless youre storing credit card info by the thousands on your computer.

anytime a popup tells you to run something, you definitely do not want to do it. this one is just a more sophisticated version of the "your IP isxxx, install our crap now!" bit.
