This is something that Ive been waiting on for a very long long time. I hope that mobo mfr's all offer something like this in the near future, and not just some alienware exclusive thing.

Since when did 2 cpus help out gaming? every bench I have ever seen shows dual 3.06 Xeons running (virtually) the same as one P4 3.0. Also, who's gonna pay for 2 6800s? Just about everyone is in a tizzy about spending $500 for one of them, let alone near $1000 for 2. Also, why would you need 2 gpus? By the time they get seriously overworked, the next generation will be hitting the shelves, and guess what? You're broke cuz you bought 2 of the last ones.

Its because alienware is retarded. There's hardly any games out that stress my 9800 Pro. I think farcry is the only one that really pushes it hard. This is ridiculous.

Agreed.

Not rediculous at all. Theres a lot of very graphic heavy engines coming up that the 9800 and 5950 arent gonna handle on the highest settings. Unreal 3 engine being one of them. What kind of settings are you using? Maximum Details with full AA and AF?

This is a system for extreme graphics. High resolutions, full anti aliasing and antisotropic filtering. Theres no system out now that can handle Doom 3 like that. Even Half-Life 2. Lots of the newer engines are using multiple threads as well to take advantage of systems with more than one CPU. Just because you dont see the need for it doesnt mean there is no need for it.

Well, I ran 3dmark 03 with one cpu and then with 2 and I got a 2 PT increase.

I suppose that for the few people with DEEEEEP pockets the system would kick butt. Sheesh though, thats gonna cost a ton! Most people already avoid xeons like the plague cuz of the price.

Its because the average gamer cant see anything better than 4x for both. The human eye isnt really capable of the technology we are pushing. maybe they should give us new eyes. so we can tell the difference between 4x FSAA and 8x FSAA so we can see the difference between 8x and 16x ansio. Its very hard to tell, but i guess when the frames drop you'll know.

Thats because 3dmark tests your GPU, not your CPU. And its not multi-thread.

Running Xeons for gaming is dumb. That is what I agree with. Its way way too much money, and they really dont do anything for gaming. Their for servers, just like that P4EE(Intels marketing BS at work). But say your running 2 Athlon XP or 64's, or 2 P4's, then theres your gaming performance. They can setup the threads to do specific jobs, Im no programmer so I cant say how exactly it works, but you could probably have 1 CPU doing most of the graphical workload between the GPUs and then the other doing the rest of that and the sound.

And with all that CPU power, you got 2 GPUs to do back it up and thats when you start cranking up the AntiAliasing and Antisotropic Filtering. Thats where you get the extreme quality of graphics, almost no jagged edges and textures that look amazing. I nearly fell out of my chair durring the Unreal 3 Engine demo at the 6800U unveiling when they zoomed in on that one monster. Imagine playing with that kind of quality in real time at a high framerate.

Sounds impressive, I really would like to see them do more with hyper threading on games, my computer is seeing 4 cpus right now and my games aren't using them. How would 2 P4s run faster? When I look at game benches, one xeon is comparible or identical to a P4.

How long before we use that "incredible 8GB of Ram" mine can run that but I took 3GB of the four I had back cuz I saw zero increase in performance, even while rendering high demand 3D graphic programs.

Thats it though. Say 1 Xeon is the same as 1 P4 in gaming(not sure if thats exactly true or not). All the extras in the xeon dont do it any good for gaming because its designed for server instructions, thats where that L3 cache comes in. So if you had the choice for a gaming system between a P4 or a Xeon, knowing they would give you the exact same performance for gaming and the price difference was $600, which would you choose?

The problem is now PC mfrs have caught on to the general consumer who is uneducated about PC's. Its the same thing Intel has done with that damn P4EE. The people buying it are the ones that dont know any better for the most part(Although Ive heard those make good O/Cing chips, their still too damned expensive). The ones that do know about it mostly build their own systems and avoid that trap, they know what they need and they get what they need. Ive worked on PCs for people who just browse the net, listen to music and use word, no gaming at all, and they have $3000 machines. Simply because they dont know any better. They see the advertising and think 'thats just what I need', meanwhile the CPU load never goes above 50%. PC salesmen are just as bad as car salesmen now.

Once in a while I go over to like Circuit City or Bestbuy and I hover near the PC's to hear what the salesmen say. I hear more BS from those guys in 10 mins than anyone could stand. Several times when they people looking to buy say 'Ill think about it', I try and help them out a bit. Ive gotten evil eye from many salesmen in bestbuy, havent been thrown out yet, but Im sure one day I might be. Theres a whole other side to it though and that is, if you dont research it, its your own fault. Ive been guilty of that with Headphones before and made a mistake of buying some, get home and they SUCKED so bad I laughed.

Its good in a way for me at least cuz now people will look more into gaming support/design/benchmarks/testing for xeons, yippee! I'm tired of seeing P4 this and P4 that, show me the stupid xeons! I think I've only seen two sites that bench them for games, granted because they aren't designed for games of course but for this workstation user, it matters! If this dual cpu stuff is all that for games, why don't they have dual P4s? Intel could sucker a ton of idiots into getting TWO high end P4 processors with the gaming reputation of them as well.

Posted by: SKYHN

Because they make more money off the Xeons. What would make them more money - 2x$300 P4's or 2x$850 Xeons?

They already sell a gaming version of the Xeon though, the P4EE.

ALienware doesnt have a very good customer service...Imagine all the complaints they will be receiving with the liquid cooling they will employ:

I personnally dont favor alienware....I think their idea is crap...armystud0911 couldnt have said it better!!!!
