if you have restore disks, youll need to follow their instructions. if you have the real Windows whatever, boot from the disk and partition if desired. the next step will be a format.

When i format, i'm usually really finnicky about it, i've got it down to routine now.
1.
Back-up everything you want, if you're like me and have a lot of stuff to remember, hold-off formatting for about a week, you should remember everything that way.
2.
Grab a '98 start-up disk, jam it in and restart.
Fdisk if wanted, i usually do this even if i'm not changing the partitions, and to tell you the truth i don't know why...
Anyway, this step is optional
Alternatively, jump to step 4
3.
Format
Self explanitory. I think there's a switch to get rid of the master boot record too, if you really want to do that.
Alternatively, jump to step 4
4.
XP Re-install
Now, jam the XP cd in, take the boot disk out and restart, with any luck XP will boot off the CD.
Go through the installation and you're done, if you didn't format yet, XP will give you the oppurtunity during the installation.
If XP doesn't boot off the CD, (And it does happen) use the boot disk to get into dos with CD-rom support, and find a copy of windows '98 or earlier, on the CD, run setup.exe. Go though that installation and once that's done upgrade to XP.
