IBM Drops AMD in North America

From C|NET:
IBM has quietly discontinued using Advanced Micro Devices' chips in PCs sold in North America, as the battle for market share between AMD and Intel intensifies.
Big Blue continues to use AMD chips in computers sold in Asia, but an IBM spokesman confirmed Monday that the company has dropped AMD's Athlon and Duron chips from its desktop lineup for the United States and Canada. IBM has also curtailed marketing AMD-based computers in Europe, the spokesman said.
Are they cutting their own throats by limiting their suppliers?

Or shooting themselves in the foot. Has anyone seen their "do you want a clone....NO!" tv commercial? I think they are off their rockers. From what I saw, they are targeting 8 yr olds as their main market segment.

i dont think they are cutting their throats any more than Dell who happens to be the lead off the shelf puter maker. the problem with AMD and AMD chipsets whether AMD lovers like it or not is the very high initial failure rate of their chips and boards. with the exposed cores and transistors on the outside of the AMD chips this also i would imagine lead to a large number of crushed CPU cores when the factory monkeys are pacing heatsinks on em. while the average user may never experience a out of the box failure 2-3-4 in 20 failing, not counting the losses do to worker error, when ur talking tens of thousands of chips and boards is a very large amount and it isnt something companies like IBM who are trying to make a comeback want to eat as an expense. i think that is the main reason Dell doesnt sell AMD. people that buy comps off the shelf dont care what is actually in them else E-Machines would never sell and no one would buy Compaq or imac. All they care about is price/features/quality. While AMD is popular in the niche market of home builders it is not making a lot of headway with the major retailers. if u go and look at any store that sells comps off the shelf the large majority are intel machines. anyway just my opinion but i dont think it is IBM commiting suicide by any stretch.

I'm guessing it has more to do with total sales and the slow economy. Asia and Europe buy most of the AMD chips and most of the Athlons are made in Germany. Which is why they are still supplying AMD desktops there. They probably expect to not make much money in the states with the slow economy so they're making cutbacks.

I like Intel as much as AMD, but I seriously think that AMD has the better product out there right now. You are right though. Most people who know computers and are er...for lack of a better word...tech geeks and computer nuts, go AMD. Corporate businesses and people who don't know better go Intel.

"The AMD processors are not currently offered in the United States," Page said. "That choice ended in May 2001 when we simplified the product line to make it easier for customers to understand."
LOL, why don't he just quit candycoating it and say we're too dumb as a whole to understand the difference between them?..hehe

Lol. Got a nice dated article quoting Michael Dell that
"Describing some of his customers as being at the "lunatic fringe" of computer use -- those users who are happy to remove and replace peripherals such as sound or video cards -- Dell said: "We found the AMD environment to be much more fragile... than equivalent Intel systems." He went on, "These are system issues that underlie the integrity of our own brand."
Great...I am considered a part of the "Lunatic fringe" by Michael Dell. Am I wrong or is it the lunatic fringe who prefers AMDs? This is the reason why Dell does not use AMD?...bah! Here is the article dated Feb 2000 (old news)

And another interesting article dated July 5 2001 titled: Dell and AMD, The Questionnaire" Just scroll half way down the article to get to this one.
