New Hard Drive

I have just bought a new hard drive (160 gig) but after I installed it, I can only get 128 gigs, can someone tell me what is wrong?

Some parts of the hard driver is taken by the 'Boot partition' DOS based software, but it is not that large loss at all.
BIOS has to recognize a hard driver and in some cases it will not do that, i.e in some cases the BIOS hast to be updated.
I would recommend to borrow or buy a Partition Magic 7 or 8 to investicate the missing section. I had similar problem just last saturday with a clients hard driver (40G) BIOS just didn't accept the whole aize but with Partition Magic 7 I managed to make use of the missing part.

BIOS has its limit and in worst cases separate programs are needed to able use of large hard drivers (programs like Data Lifeguard Tools/EZ Install).

Google search 'missing gigas in new hard driver' or something like that and you will read that there are several reasons for that problem and that you are not alone.

its the program you used to partition it. dos-based programs cant go above 134 or so. youll have to do some investigating. google is good, try looking for partitioning programs.

I had a similar problem with my 120gig. I used Partition Magic 8 and it cleared it right up.

I got partition magic but I can't figure out what do. Also, the bios says it has 160 gigs.

When you start the Partition Magic you should see the partitions, partition C should be visible but the D is gray, left han mouse click it (the D partition). Follow the screen info that follows the action. Make sure that you choose the same type FAT as in the C partition (normally FAT32, for Windows 98/ME and LINUX, FAT NT for Windows 2000 and XP). If you are thinking to load LINUX use FAT 32, LINUX doesn't understand FAT NT.
In the end click Apply Changes, your PC will boot and do the changes in DOS mode, so don't get frightened. )

IF that didn't do the trick then click the partition D and use the Create New Partition and follow the screen and in the last apply the changes.

As long you do not click the Apply Changes nothing will happend, i.e cou can change partition sizes and create new partitions, but in case you made a mistake and a partition is created that you didn't want you can use PM again to Merge the partition where you want.

Partition Magic is very good tool and wort experimenting with as long you know what changes you want to be executed. )
