Black screen as startup menu

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi i'm having a few problems with Warcraft III, and hopefully this is the place where i can finnally get some answers:

After installing the game (which went without a hitch), I patched it and started the program and watched the nice little intro movie. But then after the movie was over, the screen just turned black. I could see the guantlet cursor thingy, and the white letters V. 1.04 in the bottom right corner, but there was nothing else where the startup screen is supposed to be. I've patched the game, restarted it, ran it in compatability mode, and basically tried everything short of assassinating the president, and even now i'm getting desperated enough to try that But anyways, nothing seems to work. I don't know why. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a lot in advance.

We need to know your system specs and the exact things you've tried so far... it doesn't help if you say "tried everything short of assassinating the president".

Your comment about "finally getting some answers" implies that you've gone elsewhere for help... where else did you go and what suggestions were you given?

woops sorry, my mistake. Kinda slipped my mind... heh. Anyways I've tried a friends advice and a few other forums(that were mostly dead). Since i know next to nothing about computers I used some crude methods suggested; I've tried reinstalling the game, changing my resolution, reinstalling DirectX 9, patching and repatchin, and running in win98 compatability mode. Some of the computer wizzes are probably gonna laugh at my pathetic attempts but oh well :P Oh yeah, and also here's my system info, if that helps.

WinXP Home Edition
512 MB Ram
Nvidia GeForce (forgot the edition, but its 128 MB)
AMD Athlon 2200 MHz
RealTek AC97 Audio
DirectX 9

Okay, I need you to download this file and double-click it:

http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/war3/other/war3.reg

It will reduce/turn off all of your Warcraft III video and sound settings in the Registry. Please post back with the results of starting up the game with those settings.

The steps you're taking are the right ones, and the game should work fine on your computer. This is a software issue, and most likely it's a driver issue.

Do you have the latest drivers for your video card, sound card and motherboard chipset installed? That's probably the most important troubleshooting step you need to take.

Well, when i downloaded that and ran Warcraft the same screen came up, except the resolution was blurrier. That was the only difference i noticed.

And I'm quiet sure i have the latest video and sound card drivers... not so sure about the chipset though, so i guess i'll check that out. Thanks a lot for the tip.

Next, I'd like you to please try running the game in OpenGL and SWTNL modes by following the steps at this link:

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr0649p7

Also, try running the game in a window with the -window argument.

Now that I think about it, although having the latest drivers for your sound card and motherboard chipset installed is nice, this is really a display issue. I'd like to know what version of the Nvidia drivers you have installed, and please make sure to post back the results of running the game with the -opengl, -swtnl and -window arguments.

If the problem goes away in OpenGL mode, I'd like you to please click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the box and click OK. Click the Display tab and run the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests. Do you have any graphical problems when you run those tests?

I doubt its a opengl poblem, beacuse he dont get the error out.

This usually happen if you install the game in a different OS.

Maybe its direct3d probelm (check it same as you check opengl, NegotiatorSmith told you)

** doesnt WC3 have an safe mode ?

What?

Again I say, "what?". This doesn't make any sense to me, as the game works fine under Windows 98, Me, 2000 and XP.

Warcraft III's equivalent of a "safe mode" is found in the registry file that I linked Peaz to earlier.

If it was a opengl problem, he would get errors out, not just black screen. AND all other games WOULD NOT work (well at least newer ones....1995+). Open gl MUST be turned on for wc3.......

Lets say you install the game on win98, and then you setup a new windows, and try to run the game. Most of games WONT work.

Anyway, this your quotation is useless, i really dont see what you want to prove ???

Warcraft III runs in Direct3D by default, and you do NOT have to run it in OpenGL. I am having him run the game in OpenGL to see if this is a DirectX problem.

It's not necessarily true that if he tries OpenGl and the game doesn't work that all other OpenGL games won't work either. The same applies to Direct3D.

Oh, I see what you're saying, you think that he might have installed a newer version of Windows on top of an older one and it's causing a problem. Yes, I'd agree that that might cause a problem.

I quoted you because I was wanted clarification of what you said, and I had no intention of proving anything.

Ok, I tried every mode, opengl, swtnl, and window, but none of them made any difference. I still got a blank screen w/ a cursor, a version number, and nothing else. And also, my driver is NVIDIA Ver. 5.3.0.3. ... which i think is the newest.

I didn't install the game on another OS, it was directly installed on XP, which im using right now.

PS. thanks for all your help so far guys

did you try to go to their tech support at www.blizzard.com ???Even if you got your driver out of your box, it is usually not the newest...so check on the net for any later versions.

Posted by: Peaz

I've done everything on the tech support page for the black screen except get new drivers and motherboard updates, since i'm not sure what version i had, and updating windows, since i really didnt have time. Here's a list of things i tried, none of them helped:

Closed all apps, disabled firewall and antivirus
Running in -opengl and -swtnl and -window modes
Downloaded latest DirectX
Running the war3 and soundmax reg files
Tested DirectX Direct3D and Direct Draw, all successful
Reinstalled the game
Patching and repatching
Running in 98 compatibility mode
Changing my resolution

I also ran the DirectX Diagnostic thingy, and it said my main driver is

Main Driver: nv4_disp.dll
Version 6.14.0010.5303 (English)
DDI Version: 9 (or highter)

and my sound driver was version 5.10.0000.5300 (english)

I have no idea what that means, and I'm hoping somebody can tell me if they are the latest drivers, and where to download the latest drivers if they are not new. Thanks.

well a higher number will probably mean a newer driver(most probably)....so look on the internet to see if you can find any newer sound driver for your device.

Posted by: NegotiatorSmith

Get the latest drivers for your video card here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72

Uninstall whatever drivers you have installed now, install those and see if the game is displayed properly. Most likely the cause of your problem is corrupted or improperly installed video drivers.

As for the latest drivers for your sound card, they can be gotten at your motherboard manufacturer/PC manufacturer's website. Go there and compare the version they have available to the one you currently have installed. I doubt this problem is related to your sound drivers, so I wouldn't worry too much about updating/reinstalling them.

Same problem for me, Nvidia TNT 2.
Also the icons of war3.exe and worldedit.exe are gone.
